Southern Mahratta Railway

Southern Mahratta Railway (SMR) was a railway company in British India founded in 1882.

History

Captain C.C.Johnson, officiating as constructing engineer of railways in 1858 forwarded the proposal for a railway to be constructed and called it the Southern Mahratta Railway.[1] The Southern Mahratta Railway company was formed on 1 June 1882 with its headquarters at Dharwar. Southern Mahratta Railway's first line was a metre gauge line of 40.5 mile long from Bellary to Hospet. This line was opened for traffic on 24 March 1884. In 1886 the Mysore State Railway's management was also taken by the Southern Mahratta Railway company.[2] In 1888, a line was extended from Londa towards Portuguese Goa where it connected with the Marmagao line at Castle Rock.[3] In 1889-90 the Southern Mahratta Railway company constructed the first coast to coast line from Marmagoa to Beswada.[3] The Londa - Castle Rock line was later taken over by West of India Portuguese Railway.[3] SMR was later merged with Madras Railway to form the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway. The merger took place on 1 January 1908.

Conversion to broad gauge

The railway lines were converted to 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad gauge in 1997.[4]

1932 Madras and Southern Mahratta railway strike

1932 Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Strike was a general strike launched against the retrenchment policies of the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Company. The strike lasted from 24 October 1932 to 8 January 1933 and was moderate and non-violent in character as opposed to the 1928 South Indian Railway Strike which was extremely violent.

Egmore

Egmore is a neighbourhood of Chennai, India. Situated on the northern banks of the Coovum River, Egmore is an important residential area as well as a commercial and transportation hub. The Egmore Railway Station was the main terminus of the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway and later, the metre gauge section of the Southern division of the Indian Railways. It continues to be an important railway junction. The Government Museum, Chennai is also situated in Egmore. Other important institutions based in Egmore include the Government Women and Children's Hospital, the Tamil Nadu State Archives and the Tamil Nadu Archaeology Department. The Wesley Church, Egmore is the oldest church of the region.

Guntakal–Renigunta section

Guntakal–Renigunta section connects Guntakal and Renigunta in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is administered under Guntakal railway division of South Central Railway zone. It has a total route length of 309.50 km (192.31 mi).

Guntur railway division

Guntur Railway Division is one of the three divisions of the South Coast Railway zone of Indian Railways. It was created in 1997 for better administration in the respective railway zone and became fully functional on 1 April 2003 with P.N Shukla as its first divisional manager. The Madras Railway was formed in 1845 and its first track from Royapuram in Chennai (then known as Madras) to Arcot was opened in 1856.It had as its objective, connection of Chennai on the east coast with the west coast, as also linking up with Bengaluru and the Nilgiris, and to link up with the line from Mumbai.1857 from Walaja Road to Cuddalore route was proposed via Katpadi. The link with the west coast was first established in 1862 with a line to Beypore, which served as the western terminus of Madras Railway. The western terminus was shifted to Khozikode (then known as Calicut) in 1888.The link between Jolarpettai, a station on the Chennai-Beypore line of Madras Railway, and Bangalore Cantt. was established in 1864.In 1871, Madras Railway extension up to Raichur was linked with an extension of Great Indian Peninsula Railway from Kalyan to Raichur, thereby establishing Chennai-Mumbai link. The Chennai-Vijayawada link was established in 1899, thereby paving the way for opening of the Howrah-Chennai main line.The southern part of the East Coast State Railway (from Waltair to Vijayawada) was taken over by Madras Railway in 1901. Amongst the constituent railways of Madras Railway were Kolar Goldfields Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway and Shornapur Cochin Railway.The Madras Railway was merged with Southern Mahratta Railway in 1908 to form Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway.

Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway

The Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway was a railway company that operated in southern India. It was founded on 1 January 1908 by merging the Madras Railway and the Southern Mahratta Railway.

Initially, its headquarters was at Royapuram in Madras but was later shifted to a newly constructed building at Egmore, which was inaugurated on 11 December 1922. On 1 April 1944, its management was taken over directly by the Government of India. On 14 April 1951, the Madras and South Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway and the Mysore State Railway were merged to form the Southern Railway, one of the 16 zones of the Indian Railways.

Southern Railway Headquarters, Chennai

Southern Railway headquarters administrative building, Chennai, is an Indo-Saracenic structure located adjacent to the Chennai Central on Poonamallee High Road. Built in 1921 as the new Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Company (MSMR) headquarters (successor of Madras Railway Company), replacing the general office of MSMR at Royapuram Railway Station, the building now functions as the headquarters of the Southern Railways. The building was built at a cost of ₹ 2 million by T. Samynada Pillai, a leading Bangalore-based contractor, who was given the contract upon the successful completion of the Egmore Railway Station. Built for the first time in India in reinforced concrete in classical and Dravidian styles, the building was designed by N. Grayson, a 'company architect', working for the Madras & Southern Mahratta Railway. It took nine years and over ₹ 3 million to complete the building and was inaugurated on 11 December 1922.

Southern Railway zone

The Southern Railway (abbreviated SR), headquartered at Chennai, is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways. It is the earliest of the 18 zones of the Indian Railways created in independent India. It was created on 14 April 1951 by merging three state railways, namely, the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway Company, and the Mysore State Railway. The South Indian Railway was originally created in the British colonial times as Great Southern India Railway Co founded in Britain in 1853 and registered in 1859. Its original headquarters was in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) and was registered as a company in London only in 1890. At present, after re-organization of existing railway zones and creation of new zones undertaken by the Indian Railways between 2002-03, Southern Railway has emerged as the 2nd largest zone after undertaking some gauge conversion projects and creation of new lines.
