Sambalpur University

Sambalpur University is located at Sambalpur, India, in the Indian state of Odisha.[2] Popularly known as Jyoti Vihar. It offers courses at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. Governor of Odisha is the Chancellor of the university. The campus is located 15 km away from Sambalpur in Burla.

History

On 10 December 1966 the Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature for establishment of a University in the Western part of Odisha. This institute started from 1 January 1967. The first Vice-Chancellor was Prof. Parasuram Mishra. The University started functioning in 1967 in a rented private building at Dhanupali, Sambalpur; then in a government building at Ainthapali, Sambalpur. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla.

It is also a designated 'Manuscript Conservation Centre' (MCC) under the National Mission for Manuscripts established in 2003.[3]

Location

The present campus of the University is located at Burla, 2 km away from NH 6. The campus of this university is in the vicinity of Mahanadi Coal Fields Limited, VSSUT[4] and located on the foothills of the world-famous Hirakud Dam.

Infrastructure and facilities

Sambalpur University is located at Burla, Western Odisha. The university is surrounded by dense forest and hills. This campus is very natural and beautiful. One can enjoy the green scenery during winter and rainy season. This varsity is well known as the knowledge hub of Western Odisha.

There are ten postgraduate hostels in the university campus out of which four are ladies’ hostels and six are men’s hostels. The university provides several facilities to the boarders in the hostels like common room with television, reading room with newspaper and magazine, guest room, first aid, STD telephone booth, etc. The central canteen has been opened near the hostel campus for the benefit of students. There are two nationalized banks, one post-office, one health center, one auditorium, one police-out post, one faculty house and one community center have been established in the university campus for providing services to students/teachers and employees in the campus.

Admission

Admission to PG Diploma, MA, M Sc., M Tech, M.Phil, M.C.A, M.B.A and PhD courses are being conducted with an entrance examination. A smart number of candidates from various parts of the country/abroad come for this examination.

Academics and research

The postgraduate (PG) departments of Sambalpur University offers PG Diploma, MA, M Sc., M Tech, M.Phil, PhD, and D.Sc degrees. All the departments are actively involved in research and well equipped for research facility for NET/JRF/GATE students.[5] This varsity offers a limited numbers of scholarships for bright students to pursue their research work in various fields. Many PG departments have been recognized as centre of excellence and have been receiving special grants for conducting cutting edge research. Various P.G. Depts are also working on DRS projects. Apart from this the university faculties have their own research projects funded by national and international agencies and the students are admitted as research fellows in such schemes. Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education

The Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education has started in the year 1998 with only on-campus courses in collaboration with P.G. Departments of Sambalpur University. In the year 2000 the Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education has launched BCA, PGDCA and PGDIT courses. Asian Workers Development Institute, Rourkela (AWDI) is a management institute located in sector 06 of city Rourkela. It was established in the year 1981 under Bastia Memorial Trust. The Instituteis affiliated to AICTE and Sambalpur University. In the year 2013 Business Today ranked AWDI at 183 as India's business school of east region of Odisha.

Birmaharajpur College

Birmaharajpur College(Odia: ବୀରମହାରାଜପୁର ମହାବିଦ୍ୟାଳୟ)started in Birmaharajpur town, Odisha, India, in 1981. The college came under the jurisdiction of Sambalpur University and started functioning in its initial years in Birmaharajpur High School. Then it was moved to the current location on 1983. The College area extends over nearly ten acres of land. The financial contribution of various panchayats within Birmaharajpur was significant in enabling the college to raise its infrastructure.

During its starting period the College had a strength of 128 students with only +2 Arts stream. Later B.A. Courses were started on year 1983-84. But because of the change of Government policy, +2 courses in the Arts and Science streams and +3 courses in the Arts stream were reintroduced with effect from 1983–84, 1988–89 and 1985–86 respectively by replacing the traditional I. A. and B.A. courses. Presently, the institute is affiliated to Sambalpur University.

Various Honors subjects viz Oriya, History, Political Science, Economics and Education are being offered by this college.

Burla, India

Burla is a locality in Sambalpur city in the state of Odisha, India. It earlier had a Notified Area Council (NAC) until 2014 after which it was included in Sambalpur city under Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC). It was earlier a small town on the banks of Mahanadi. One can reach this place by road with National Highway 6 which is one of the busiest trunk routes in India as it connects Hazira to Kolkata. Hirakud Railway Station is at one end of the town and a walking distance from the Mahanadi Coal Limited (MCL).

Dr. Ambedkar Memorial Institute of Information Technology and Management Science

Dr. Ambedkar Memorial Institute of Information Technology and Management Science or (DAMITS) is a business school located in Jagda of city Rourkela. DAMITS was established in the year 2001 under Dr. Ambedkar Memorial Social, Welfare & Educational Trust. The Institute is affiliated to AICTE, Sambalpur University and Biju Patnaik University of Technology. The Institute offers three years regular course on undergraduate degree of BBA and BCA with two years regular course on postgraduate degree of MBA and MCA.

Education in Rourkela

Rourkela is the educational, technical and medical research hub of Western Odisha. It houses many English medium schools which provide Central Board of Secondary Education and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education certificates to their students.

Government Autonomous College, Rourkela

Government Autonomous College(Odia: ସରକାରୀ ସ୍ୱୟଂଶାସିତ ମହାବିଦ୍ୟାଳୟ, ରାଉରକେଲା)is a state-run co-aid undergraduate and postgraduate college located in Panposh of city Rourkela. The college was established in the year 1961 as Government Science College but latter on it was renamed as Government Autonomous College. The institution upholds the development of majority of student's mostly coming from economically weaker sections and Scheduled Tribe. The college is Accredited by NACC with grade ['B'] certification. Presently Dr. Mr. Debendranath behera is the principal and the college is affiliated to Sambalpur University, which prepares undergraduate students for regular three years bachelor courses on Arts (B.A), Science (B.Sc), Commerce (B.Com). The college has also center for Indira Gandhi National Open University for distance learners.

Haldhar Nag

Haldhar Nag is a Sambalpuri poet and writer from Odisha, India. Popularly known as Lok kabi Ratna. He was born in a poor family of Ghens in Bargarh district of Odisha on 31 March 1950. Nag has been compared to Gangadhar Meher for his Kosli style of writing which is also known as Sambalpuri writing, and is the western-variation of the Odia language of writing poem.The BBC made a documentary film about his life and works. He is best known for his work Kavyanjali, an anthology of English translation of Nag's selected poetry which was launched in 2nd October 2016.He has lakhs of followers in Odisha and Chatishgarh, who congregate in large numbers to listen to his Sambalpuri poetry when he gives readings. Initially writing Sambalpuri folk stories, in the 1990s he started writing poems in the Sambalpuri language.Hundreds of poets imitate his style and technique boosting a robust "HaldharDhara" in Western Odisha. He has been at the forefront of the Sambalpuri language movement for inclusion in 8th schedule of Constitution. He was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India by Government of India in 2016.

Sambalpur University is coming up with a compilation of his writings — Haldhar Granthabali-2 — which will be a part of its syllabus.

Ispat Autonomous College, Rourkela

Ispat Autonomous College (Odia:ଇସ୍ପାତ ସ୍ୱୟଂଶାସିତ ମହାବିଦ୍ୟାଳୟ) is a co-aid educational institute in Rourkela, in the north-west part of Odisha. The courses of the college at the higher secondary level are affiliated to CHSE, Odisha, and under-graduated and post-graduate level courses are offered in affiliation with Sambalpur University, Odisha. It is a private autonomous college recognised by the UGC and Department of Higher Education, Odisha.

Laxminarayan College, Jharsuguda

Laxminarayan College, Jharsuguda, also called L. N. College, is a full-fledged aided College of the Government of Odisha located in Jharsuguda district of Odisha. It was founded in 18th August 1969. This College comes under Sambalpur University. It imparts teaching in Arts, Science and Commerce both in +2 or senior secondary education and +3(three year) Degree Course stage with honours teaching facilities.

Municipal College, Rourkela

Municipal College (Odia: ମୁନିସିପାଲ୍ କଲେଜ) Rourkela is one of the oldest institution imparting +2, undergraduate degree (Arts, Commerce & Science) to students in western Odisha and around. The college laid its foundation in 1978 under Rourkela Education Development Society (REDS) which was due to patronage of the founding member A.J Alex (I.A.S ex ADM of Rourkela) and NAC(CT) Pitambar Mohanty OAS(I).

Panchayat College Bargarh

Panchayat College(Odia: ପଞ୍ଚାୟତ ମହାବିଦ୍ୟାଳୟ, ବରଗଡ଼)located in Bargarh, western Odisha, India was inaugurated on 5 July 1960 by Utkal Kesari Dr. Hare Krushna Mahatab, the then chief minister of Odisha.

This institute is regarded as an important college of western Odisha. Panchayat College comes under the jurisdiction of Sambalpur University.There are streams like arts ,commerce & science in this college. B.ED and IGNOU courses are also available.

Parshuram Mishra

Parshuram Mishra (24 January 1894 – 4 August 1981) was an Indian botanist, educationist and the first vice chancellor of the Sambalpur University. He completed his college studies at the University of Calcutta in 1961 and secured a doctoral degree (PhD) from the University of Leeds, the first person from Odisha to secure a doctoral degree from the university. He is a former member of faculty at Leeds during which period he published several botanical articles. Returning to India, he became the vice chancellor of Utkal University. When the Government of Odisha started Sambalpur University in 1967, Mishra was made the first vice chancellor.The Government of India honoured him in 1960, with the award of Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award for his services to the nation. Dr. P. M. Institute of Advanced Study in Education, an institution started in 1988 for advanced studies in education is named after him.

Rajendra College Balangir

Rajendra College (Autonomous), Balangir(Odia: ରାଜେନ୍ଦ୍ର କଲେଜ (ସ୍ୱୟଂଶାସିତ), ବଲାଙ୍ଗିର)is in Balangir town in the state of Odisha, India. It was upgraded to a degree college in July 1946 by offering B.A. (pass) class. It became a full-fledged degree college after the affiliation of Commerce Faculty (B.Com. class) in 1964-65 and Science faculty (B.Sc. class) in 1965-66. From 1978-79 it started offering post graduate courses in Arts, Science and Commerce. From 1967 to 2002 this college was under Sambalpur University.

Currently, it is an autonomous Institution as declared by U.G.C. The college is NAAC accredited as B++.

Sambalpuri language

Sambalpuri is an Indo-Aryan language variety spoken in western Odisha, India. It is alternatively known as Western Odia, or as Kosali (with variants Kosli, Koshal and Koshali), a recently popularised but controversial term, which draws on an association with the ancient Kosala Kingdom, whose vast territories also included the present-day Sambalpur region.Its speakers usually perceive it as a separate language, while outsiders have seen it as a dialect of Odia, and standard Odia is used by Sambalpuri speakers for formal communication. A 2006 survey of the varieties spoken in four villages found out that they share three-quarters of their basic vocabulary with Standard Odia.Sambalpuri is spoken in the following districts of Odisha: Sambalpur (with the city of Sambalpur, the chief cultural and commercial centre of the region), Deogarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Subarnapur, Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Boudh, the Athmallik subdivision of Angul district. Sambalpuri speakers are also found in neighbouring areas of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.

Sushilavati Government Women's College, Rourkela

Sushilavati Government Women's College is a state run undergraduate women's college located in sector two of city Rourkela. S. G. Women's College was established in the year 1967 by Mrs. Sushilavati Khosla who was wife of ex- governor of Odisha Dr. Ajudhiya Nath Khosla. She donated an amount of Rs one lakh for starting this college in collaboration with D.A.V Trust. In the year 1989 the administration and funding of college was taken by Government of Odisha to run its education curriculum. The college got its accreditation by NACC with grade B certification in the year 2005. The college is affiliated to Sambalpur University to offer students three years of regular undergraduate courses of Arts (B.A) and Science (B.Sc.).
