Raybag

Raybag (Kannada Rayabag) is a panchayat town and taluka in Belgaum district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It derives its name from the two words namely "Raya'' and "bagh" in which "Raya'' means king and "bagh" means tiger.[1]

Geography

Raybag is located at 16°29′N 74°47′E / 16.48°N 74.78°E.[2] It has an average elevation of 590 metres (1935 feet). This place is underdeveloped and is famous for its rich agriculture produce of banana and sugarcane.It has very old railway station which was made by Britishers to keep control on this territory which they used for military administrating office.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,[3] Raybag had a population of 18,984. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Raybag has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 60%. In Raybag, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Harugeri

Harugeri is a town in Raybag taluk in Belagavi District of Karnataka state, India. The town name itself having a history, harigiri "Hari" (lord Hari) and "Giri"(Sanddune) was the name before convened as Harugeri. According to some aldermen, it is called Halurukere from haluru (wreck) and kere (lakelet) before Ghataprabha Water Project; later on the town was developed by irrigation and overtook a major agricultural marketing and holds a record of economically strongest town in its taluka. It belongs to Belagavi division. It is located 100 km towards north from district headquarters Belagavi, 21 km from Raybag and 567 km from state capital Bangalore. It was upgraded as village panchayat to town municipal in 2015–16 as per 2011 census population. Before it was second largest Gram panchayat of India

The Harugeri town has population of 28,754 of which 14,681 are males while 14,073 are females and total 5,567 families residing as per population census 2011. Kannada is the local language there. Agriculture is the main economy of the town, as about two-thirds of the land that is gets irrigated by the Ghataprabha project. The town is situated about 14 kilometers away from flowing Krishna River. Main crops include sugarcane, maize, tobacco and wheat. Additionally, the town is host to a number of mostly agriculture related business and venues such as the APMC and number of sugarcane mills.

There are many schools, colleges and various banks including a branch office of the State Bank of India and Syndicate Bank in the area. Hence town becomes educational and economic hub in surrounding area.
