Naver (Hangul: 네이버)is a South Korean online platform operated by Naver Corporation. It debuted in 1999 as the first web portal in Korea to develop and use its own search engine. It was also the world's first operator to introduce the comprehensive search feature, which compiles search results from various categories and presents them in a single page. Naver has since added a multitude of new services ranging from basic features such as e-mail and news to the world's first online Q&A platform Knowledge iN.

As of September 2017, the search engine handled 74.7% of all web searches in South Korea and had 42 million enrolled users. More than 25 million Koreans have Naver as the start page on their default browser and the mobile application has 28 million daily visitors. Naver is also constantly referred to as 'the Google of South Korea'.[3]

History

Naver was created in June 1999 as the first South Korean portal website with a self-developed search engine. In August 2000, Naver began the 'comprehensive search' service, which allows users to get a variety of results from a search query on a single page, organized by type, including blogs, websites, images, cafes, etc. This was five years before Google launched a similar offer with its 'universal search' function.

In the early days of Naver's operation, there was a relative dearth of webpages available in the Korean language. To fill this void, Naver became an early pioneer in user-generated content through the creation of the 'Knowledge iN (Hangul: 네이버 지식인)' service in 2002. In Knowledge iN, users can pose questions on any subject and select among answers provided by other users, awarding points to the users who gives the best answers. Knowledge iN was launched three years before Yahoo! launched its similar 'Yahoo! Answers' service,[4] and now possesses a database of over 200 million answers.

Over the years, Naver has continued to expand its services. It launched its Web comic service 'Webtoon' in 2004 and its personal Blog service in 2005. From 2005 to 2007, Naver expanded its multimedia search services, including music and video search as well as mobile search.

Junior Naver

Junior Naver (Hangul: 쥬니어 네이버), also known as Juniver (Hangul:쥬니버), is a portal website for children considered similar to Yahooligans. Junior Naver offers services such as avatars, educational content, quizzes, videos, Q&A, and a homework helper. Junior Naver utilizes a panel of experts and educators to filter out harmful content in order to ensure a safe internet environment for children. Ever since its competitors Daum Kids and Yahoo Kids have closed down, Junior Naver is the only children's portal site operating in Korea.

Naver Webtoon

Naver Webtoon (Hangul: 네이버 웹툰) is a webcomic platform where users have free access to a variety of webtoons created by professional artists. Users can also pay publishers to view comic books and genre fiction contents online. Naver has incorporated a 'Challenge' section which allows amateurs to post and promote their own works.

Naver Cafe

Naver Cafe (Hangul: 네이버 카페) is a service that allows Naver users to create their own internet communities. There were 10.5 million cafes running as of May 2017.

Naver Blog

Naver Blog (Hangul: 네이버 블로그) started with the name 'paper' in June 2003, and evolved to 'blog' in October 2003.[5] It had 23 million users as of April 2016.

Naver TV Cast

Naver TV Cast is a web broadcast network which mainly provides web dramas distributed by Naver.

Knowledge IN

Knowledge iN (Korean:지식인), formerly Knowledge Search (Korean:지식검색), is an online Q&A platform launched in October 2002.[6] The tool allows users to ask any question and to receive answers from other users. Knowledge iN was an early example of harnessing user-generated content to expand the amount of information available on the web, particularly in the Korean language. Bradley Horowitz, former Vice President of Product Strategy at Yahoo!, has cited Knowledge iN as the inspiration for Yahoo! Answers, which was launched three years after Naver introduced the original service.[7][8]

  • Open Dictionary - is a database of informative articles generated by users. Users can create an article alone, or they can also allow other users to contribute by creating a thread of articles on the same subject. Users can also add their own answers from Knowledge Q&A to the Open Dictionary.

Naver Language Dictionary

Naver Dictionary supports 34 languages, including English, Korean, Chinese, Chinese characters, Japanese, Global Communication, Vietnamese, Uzbek, Indonesian, Thai, Arabic, Cambodian, Tamil, Mongolian, Hindi, Persian, Nepali, Swahili, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, Turkish, Georgian, Albanian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Dutch, Swedish, Hungarian, Polish, and Czech as of May 2017. Handwriting recognition is supported in Japanese and Chinese. In 2016, Naver announced that it would invest 10 billion won for the development of language dictionaries.

Naver Encyclopedia

Naver Encyclopedia consists of a professional database with over 3 million entries from many different encyclopedias.[9] More than 1000 experts in physics, food, film, and other fields are producing 45 kinds of specialized content in the encyclopedia of Naver knowledge, and 50,000 headwords are accumulated.[9] The Naver Knowledge Encyclopedia also deals with more than 100 public institutions and has received over 900 kinds of DBs.[9]

Criticism

Naver's closed platform is frequently mentioned. Their knowledge and blogs are not to be searched on other search sites, which is to operate the site to maximize. In April 2011, the second and third portal sites in Korea, Daum and Nate, signed a memorandum of understanding to open their search for services such as cafe and blogs. Naver did not choose to participate in this MOU. [10]

There is also a criticism that blogs in Naver are limited from being searched by other search engines, and that Naver helps with unauthorized publishing in order to attract users to the KnowledgeIN service. In other words, the quality of the KnowledgeIN service is a poor factor, as previous answers to a question are left unaltered, or a previous question is only allowed to be slightly altered by other netizens. Criticism is also growing as Naver unilaterally controls comments or edits information that may be against its political positions.[1]

Chungha (singer)

Chungha (Hangul: 청하; born February 9, 1996) is a South Korean singer. She finished fourth in Mnet's girl group survival show Produce 101, and is a former member of the now-disbanded South Korean girl group I.O.I.

I.O.I

I.O.I (Hangul: 아이오아이; also known as IOI or Ideal of Idol) was a South Korean girl group formed by CJ E&M through the 2016 reality show Produce 101 on Mnet. The group was composed of eleven members chosen from a pool of 101 trainees from various entertainment companies: Lim Na-young, Kim Chung-ha, Kim Se-jeong, Jung Chae-yeon, Zhou Jieqiong, Kim So-hye, Yoo Yeon-jung, Choi Yoo-jung, Kang Mi-na, Kim Do-yeon and Jeon So-mi. They debuted on May 4, 2016 with the EP Chrysalis and actively promoted as a whole and as a sub-unit for less than a year.The group's concert titled Time Slip – I.O.I, which was held on January 20 to 22, 2017, marked their last group activity on stage. They officially disbanded at the end of January 2017 and returned to their respective agencies.

It is also popular in Taiwan, Thailand, Turkmenistan and Indonesia.Line was originally developed as a mobile application for Android and iOS smartphones. The service has since expanded to BlackBerry OS (August 2012), Nokia Asha (Asia and Oceania, March 2013), Windows Phone (July 2013), Firefox OS (February 2014), iOS tablets (October 2014), and as a Chrome Browser Application (via the Chrome Web Store). Line Webtoon

Line Webtoon (stylized as LINE WEBTOON) is a webtoon portal launched by Naver Corporation in Korea in 2005. The service gained a large amount of traction during the late 2000s and early 2010s. The service first launched in Korea as Naver Webtoon and then globally as Line Webtoon in July 2014 as the Naver brand is not well known outside the country and some of its services are also not available outside of Korea. In 2016, Naver's webtoon service entered the Japanese market as XOY and the Chinese market as Dongman Manhua. On December 18, 2018, Naver closed down XOY service in Japan and migrated all of its translated and original webtoons to Line Manga, its manga service that offers licensed manga.

Me2day

Me2day (Hangul: 미투데이) was a microblogging and social networking service in South Korea acquired and owned by NHN Corporation (present-day Naver Corporation). Similar to Twitter, Me2day was popular in South Korea with earlier establishments in android market, especially among adolescents and youth of twenties. Me2DAY had an open API and most of the applications built around it added entertainment benefits to the site. OpenID was available until March 2010, but since then until the site's closure at the end of June 2014, registration was required. Information acquired during registration included only email address, ID, and password. It allowed users to send and receive up to 150 characters to each other. Many people like Big Bang, Wonder Girls, 2NE1, F(x), 2PM, Kim Tae-hee, SHINee, U-Kiss and Seoul Samsung Thunders used the service as a way of keeping their fans updated about their whereabouts. Because Me2day was run by the NHN Corporation, the creator of one of the biggest Korean portal websites Naver.com, a Naver ID user could also immediately set up an account for Me2day without signing up.

Naver Corporation (KRX: 035420) is an Internet content service company headquartered in Seongnam, South Korea that operates the Korean search engine Naver. Naver established itself as an early pioneer in the use of user-generated content through the creation of the online Q&A platform Knowledge iN. Naver also manages global mobile services such as the mobile messenger LINE, video messenger Snow, and group communication service BAND.

On August 1, 2013, Naver decided to split with Hangame, a corporation which it had grown together with as NHN Corporation for 13 years. Snow (app)

Webtoon

Webtoons (Hangul: 웹툰) are a type of digital comic that originated in South Korea. While webtoons were mostly unknown outside of the country during their inception, there has been a surge in popularity internationally thanks in great part to most comics being read on smartphones.

As digital comics have emerged as a popular medium, print publication of manhwa in South Korea has decreased. The amount of material published in webtoon form has now reached an equal amount as that published offline.
