List of compositions by Ludwig van Beethoven

The musical works of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) are classified by both genre and various numbering systems.

The most common methods of numbering Beethoven's works are by opus number, assigned by Beethoven's publishers during his lifetime, and by number within genre. For example, the 14th string quartet, published as Opus 131, may be referenced either as "String Quartet No. 14" or "the Opus 131 String Quartet".

Many works that were unpublished or else published without opus numbers have been assigned either "WoO" (works without opus number) or "Anh" (appendix) numbers. For example, the short piano piece "Für Elise", is more fully known as the "Bagatelle in A minor, WoO 59 ('Für Elise')". Some works are also commonly referred to by their nicknames, such as the 'Kreutzer' Violin Sonata, or the Eroica Symphony.

The listings include all of these relevant identifiers. While other catalogues of Beethoven's works exist, the numbers here represent the most commonly used. Years in parentheses denote dates of composition or publication.

Beethoven's works are published in several editions:

Ludwig van Beethovens Werke: Vollständige kritisch durchgesehene überall berechtigte Ausgabe, i–xxiv (Leipzig, 1862–5/R), xxv [suppl.] (Leipzig, 1888), the "Beethoven Gesamtausgabe" [GA]

Beethoven: Sämtliche Werke: Supplemente zur Gesamtausgabe, ed. W. Hess (Wiesbaden, 1959–71) [HS]

Beethoven: Werke: neue Ausgabe sämtlicher Werke, ed. J. Schmidt-Görg and others (Munich and Duisburg, 1961–) [NA]. Since 1961 the Beethoven-Archiv has been publishing a new scholarly-critical Complete Edition of Beethoven's works but only two thirds of the projected 56 volumes only two thirds have been published so far.[1] As this edition has not been published in full there are works without an NA designation.

Orchestral music

Beethoven wrote nine symphonies, nine concertos, and a variety of other orchestral music, ranging from overtures and incidental music for theatrical productions to other miscellaneous "occasional" works, written for a particular occasion. Of the concertos, seven are widely known (one violin concerto, five piano concertos, and one triple concerto for violin, piano, and cello); the other two are an early piano concerto (WoO 4) and an arrangement of the Violin Concerto for piano and orchestra (Opus 61a).

Beethoven is believed to have intended to write a Tenth Symphony in the last year of his life; a performing version of possible sketches was assembled by Barry Cooper.[5]

Chamber music

In addition to the 32 celebrated sonatas, Beethoven's work for solo piano includes many one-movement pieces, more than twenty sets of variations, most unpublished in his lifetime or published without opus number, and over thirty bagatelles, including the well-known "Für Elise".

List of works by number

The following is a list of Beethoven's works, sorted by Opus number, followed by works listed as WoO in the Kinsky–Halm Catalogue, and then works listed in the appendix of that catalog, which are given "Anhang" numbers. These are followed by additional works with Hess numbers listed in the catalog of Willy Hess that are not otherwise listed in the Kinsky–Halm Catalogue. Lastly there is works with Biamonti numbers (Bia.), from the Biamonti Catalogue, an attempt to catalogue everything that Beethoven wrote in chronological order, though there are works that were not known at the time it was compiled. Thus there is no definitive catologue of Beethoven's works to match the Deutsch catalogue for Schubert or the Köchel catalogue for Mozart.

Works with opus numbers

The opus numbers were assigned by publishers to Beethoven's works as they were published. The opus numbers do not include all works that were published in Beethoven's lifetime nor are they in chronological order. For instance, the Octet Op. 103 was written before November 1792, while Op. 102 and Op. 104 were written in 1815 and 1817 respectively.

Works with WoO numbers

The numbers and categories used below are from the Kinsky–Halm Catalogue of 1955. WoO is an abbreviation of "Werke ohne Opuszahl", German for "Works without Opus number". While some of these works were published during Beethoven's lifetime but not given opus numbers, for instance the piano variations WoO 80, others like Für Elise WoO 59 were not published until later.

The Italian musicologist Giovanni Biamonti compiled a chronological catalogue Beethoven's entire output known at the time, including sketches and fragments. While most of these works were already included in other catalogues, there were some that had been missed by earlier compilers[38]. Ludwig van Beethoven's late string quartets are the following works:

Opus 135: String Quartet No. 16 in F major (1826)These six works are Beethoven's last major completed compositions. Although dismissed by musicians and audiences of Beethoven's day, they are now widely considered to be among the greatest musical compositions of all time, and they have inspired many later composers.

String Quartets Nos. 1–6, Op. 18 (Beethoven)

Ludwig van Beethoven's Op. 18, published in 1801 by T. Mollo et Comp in Vienna in two books of three quartets each, consisted of his first six string quartets. They were composed between 1798 and 1800 to fulfill a commission for Prince Joseph Franz Maximilian Lobkowitz, who was the employer of Beethoven's friend, the violinist Karl Amenda. They are thought to demonstrate his total mastery of the classical string quartet as developed by Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The order of publication (numbering within the opus) does not correspond to the order of composition. Beethoven composed these quartets in the sequence 3, 1, 2, 5, 4, 6. See:

String Quartet No. 6 in B♭ majorBeethoven in a letter to Hofmeister in Leipzig (April 8, 1802) refers to the Mollo edition of nos. 4-6 as filled with errors - "has again let us say filled with faults and errata, great and small" and Kerman makes a similar comment, leaving one to conclude that the poor Mollo edition of nos. 4-6 - which incited at least strong private protests from the composer - may also at the same time be the best existing primary source for those three works, unless manuscripts or sketches for them have been discovered. This applies only to quartets 4, 5 and 6; the situation for the first quartet in F, especially, is different, since an entire earlier version is preserved, has been published and even recorded. While the overall set is less critically acclaimed than the "Razumovsky" quartets and the late quartets, the first quartet has been a perennially admired piece.

String Quartets Nos. 7–9, Op. 59 – Rasumovsky (Beethoven)

The three Razumovsky (or Rasumovsky) string quartets, opus 59, are the quartets Ludwig van Beethoven wrote in 1806, as a result of a commission by the Russian ambassador in Vienna, Count Andreas Razumovsky:

String Quartet No. 8 in E minor, Op. 59, No. 2

String Quartet No. 9 in C major, Op. 59, No. 3They are the first three of what are usually known as the "Middle Period" string quartets, or simply the "Middle Quartets." The other two are opus 74 and opus 95. Many quartets record all five as a set.

Beethoven uses a characteristically Russian theme in the first two quartets in honor of the prince who gave him the commission:

In Op. 59 No. 1, the "Thème russe" (as the score is marked) is the principal theme of the last movement.

In Op. 59 No. 2, the Thème russe is in the B section of the third movement. This theme is based on a Russian folk song which was also utilized by Modest Mussorgsky in the coronation scene of his opera Boris Godunov, by Sergei Rachmaninoff in the sixth movement of his 6 Morceaux for Piano Duet, Op.11 "Glory" ("Slava"), and by Igor Stravinsky in his ballet The Firebird.

In the quartet Op. 59 No. 3, there is no Thème russe explicitly named in the score, but many commentators have heard a Russian character in the subject of the Andantino movement.All three quartets were published as a set in 1808 in Vienna.

Three Piano Sonatas, WoO 47 (Beethoven)

The Three Early Piano Sonatas, WoO 47, "Kurfürstensonaten" were composed by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1782 and 1783, when he was twelve and thirteen years old. The sonatas show a certain level of precocity and serve as a precursor to the masterworks he later produced. They are dedicated to the Elector (Kurfürst) Maximilian Frederick.

WoO

Werke ohne Opuszahl ("Works without opus number") (WoO), also Kinsky–Halm Catalogue, is a German musical catalogue prepared in 1955 by Georg Kinsky and Hans Halm, listing all of the compositions of Ludwig van Beethoven that were not originally published with an opus number, or survived only as fragments.

The abbreviation WoO is also used sometimes to refer to works without opus by other composers, such as Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, Muzio Clementi, Louis Spohr, Joachim Raff, or Ferdinand Ries.

Yorckscher Marsch

Yorckscher March was written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1808 or 1809 as a march Für die böhmische Landwehr (For the Bohemian Militia). It was the first of three military marches written by Beethoven.
