Katni (also known as Murwara (Katni) or Mudwara) is a town on the banks of the Katni River in Madhya Pradesh, India. It is the administrative headquarters of Katni District. It is in the Mahakoshal region of central India. The city is 90 km (56 mi) from the divisional headquarters of the region, Jabalpur. Katni is the 2nd busiest railway junction of Madhya Pradesh. As of the 2011 census, Murwara (Katni) municipality had a population of 221,875.[1] Effective literacy was 87.43%; male literacy was 92.77% and female literacy was 81.64%.[1]

The Bina–Katni line is the railway route between Bina Junction railway station of Bina and New Katni Junction railway station of Katni in Madhya Pradesh, India.

Katni Junction railway station

Katni Junction (Station Code: KTE) is a major rail junction in Katni, India. Rail links from the junction travel in five directions — Bina, Jabalpur, Satna, Bilaspur, Singrauli. Rail links from the junction travel to New Delhi, Mumbai, Vadodara, Howrah, Chennai, Bangalore, allahabad, Kanpur, Lucknow,bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Agra, Gorakhpur, Patna, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Ambala, Bhatinda, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ajmer, Nagpur, Pune , Jammu, Raipur, Vishakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Hubli, Madurai, Vasco, rameshvaram, Kanyakumari, Ernakulam and other Indian cities. New Katni Junction railway station

New Katni Junction railway station, located on the Katni-Bilaspur line, serves Katni in Madhya Pradesh. Administrative head of New Katni Junction is Area Railway Manager. It is basically a marshaling yard and there are two locomotive sheds, Katni Diesel Shed and New Katni Electric Shed. There are also a boxn depot which is used for repair work of freight wagons. It is located between two rivers Simraul and Bimraul expanded in about 5 km.

A small colonial goods yard exist at KMZ during the early 50's. To keep pace with industrial development of the country, setting up of Bhiali & Rourkela Steel Plants and the discovery of huge stock of coal in central coalfields it was becoming necessary that infra structural facilities of quicker transportation should be developed. With this view, in mind, the Railway Board in 1956 decided to go in for construction of a Marshalling Yard in New Katni Junction at an estimated cost of Rs. 90 Lac. A huge Marshalling Yard complex was constructed between river Simraul & Bimraul and the same was opened for traffic in the morning of 19 January 1961.
