Justin B. Smith

Justin B. Smith (born August 13, 1969) is an American businessman and chief executive officer of Bloomberg Media Group. Prior to joining Bloomberg, Smith worked for Atlantic Media, The Week magazine and The Economist.[1]

Career

Smith began his career at the Department of State in 1991, working in the U.S. Embassy at Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, under Ambassador Edward Brynn.[2] After leaving the State Department, Smith joined the International Herald Tribune. He worked in Paris and in Hong Kong, where he helped build the newspaper’s conference business.[3] Smith then joined The Economist as the head of corporate strategy, working from London, Hong Kong and New York City.[4]

In 2001, Smith joined The Week, where he helped launch a U.S. version of the weekly news magazine founded in London. In 2005, Smith was promoted to president of the magazine. In 2006, he had helped The Week reach more than 443,000 U.S. subscribers.[5] While at The Week, Smith was named to AdAge’s “40 Under 40” list.[6]

In 2007, Smith was hired as president of Atlantic Consumer Media at The Atlantic.[7] In 2010, the magazine made $1.8 million, the first time the magazine had been profitable in decades.[8] Smith was promoted to president of Atlantic Media Company which gave him responsibility over National Journal and Government Executive.[3] While at The Atlantic, Smith oversaw the launch of several digital brands. In 2009, the company launched The Atlantic Wire, a news content and aggregation site now called The Wire. Site traffic reached nearly one million monthly visitors within one year of launch.[9] In 2012, the company launched Quartz for business news.[10] And in 2013, the company launched Defense One for reporting on national security.[11]

In 2010, Smith and The Atlantic publisher Jay Lauf were named Ad Age’s Publishing Executives of the Year, and The Atlantic was ranked second on Ad Age’s list of A-list magazines.[6]

Smith is also the founder of Breaking Media, a collection of specialized websites that includes Above the Law, Dealbreaker and Fashionista.[4]

Bloomberg

In July 2013, Bloomberg LP hired Justin Smith as the chief executive officer of Bloomberg Media Group, which comprises Bloomberg Television, Bloomberg Radio, Bloomberg Businessweek, and digital businesses globally. Smith reports to Bloomberg LP President and CEO Dan Doctoroff.[1] Later that year, Smith stated he would focus on launching additional online destinations at Bloomberg beyond its current slate of news sources and invest more in digital video.[12]

In April 2014, Smith hired veteran journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, who wrote Game Change and Double Down: Game Change 2012 on the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections respectively, to create a new Bloomberg website focused on American politics and policy.[13]

In 2014, The Hollywood Reporter named Smith one of the “35 Most Powerful People in New York Media.”[14]

In 2015, Mike Bloomberg called Smith one of the “smartest and most innovative people in media.”[15]

Personal

Smith was born on August 13, 1969, in Hartford, Connecticut. He attended Phillips Andover Academy[2] and graduated from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in 1991.[16] Smith is a member of the Georgetown University Board of Directors[17] and is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations.[18] He is the founder of the Bali Purnati Center for the Arts on the island of Bali and the Ouagadougou Education project.[16] In 2013, Smith was named a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute,[19] and in 2014, he was named to the board of directors for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.[20]

BNN Bloomberg

BNN Bloomberg (formerly Business News Network and Report on Business Television) is a Canadian English language specialty channel owned by Bell Media. It broadcasts programming related to business and financial news and analysis. The channel is headquartered at 299 Queen Street West in Downtown Toronto.

Since April 30, 2018, the network has operated as a partner of the U.S. business channel Bloomberg Television, although BNN still produces a large portion of its business day programming in-house. Much of the channel's programming is also simulcast by the radio station CFTE 1410 in Vancouver, under the branding BNN Bloomberg Radio.

Bloomberg Aptitude Test

The Bloomberg Aptitude Test (BAT) is an aptitude test owned, published, and developed by Bloomberg Institute - an educational division of Bloomberg LP. It is used by employers in the business world to evaluate employment candidates. The exam tests individuals on their ability to think critically on financial topics and the results are used to measure their level of readiness for a career in business related fields. The exam is administered in 58 countries on university campuses and reaches out to employers on a global scale. It was first introduced as the Bloomberg Assessment Test, then changed into the Bloomberg Aptitude Test in 2013 as to reflect its ability in measuring innate financial potential and career skills rather than technical know-how and learned knowledge. It is now discontinued and replaced by a paid service called Bloomberg Market Concepts

Bloomberg Beta

Bloomberg Beta is an early stage venture capital firm with $150M under management, capitalized solely by Bloomberg. The fund exists to expand Bloomberg’s horizons by investing in companies that make business work better, with a focus on machine intelligence. Bloomberg Beta was recognized by VC review site CB Insights as the #2 investor in AI. The firm invests purely for financial return. Led by Roy Bahat, a technology business operator and entrepreneur, Bloomberg Beta has an unconventional investing model where anyone on the team can say yes to a deal. The investing partnership has an equal male-to-female ratio.The fund launched in June, 2013 with $75 million of funding from Bloomberg L.P.Bloomberg Beta is headquartered in San Francisco, California, with additional operations in New York City.

Bloomberg Businessweek is an American weekly business magazine published since 2009 by Bloomberg L.P. Businessweek, founded in 1929, aimed to provide information and interpretation about events in the business world. The magazine is headquartered in New York City. Megan Murphy served as editor from November 2016; she stepped down from the role in January 2018 and Joel Weber was appointed in her place.

The magazine is published 47 times a year.

Bloomberg L.P.

Bloomberg L.P. is a privately held financial, software, data, and media company headquartered in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It was founded by Michael Bloomberg in 1981, with the help of Thomas Secunda, Duncan MacMillan, Charles Zegar, and a 30% ownership investment by Merrill Lynch.Bloomberg L.P. provides financial software tools such as an analytics and equity trading platform, data services, and news to financial companies and organizations through the Bloomberg Terminal (via its Bloomberg Professional Service), its core revenue-generating product. Bloomberg L.P. v. Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System

Bloomberg L.P. v. Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, 1:2008cv09595, was a lawsuit by Bloomberg L.P. against the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System for disclosure of information about banks and other financial institutions that had borrowed from the Federal Reserve discount window during the United States housing bubble and ensuing financial crisis.

During the financial crisis, the U.S. Congress, Federal Reserve, Treasury Department and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, developed the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 to shore up financial institutions by purchasing mortgage-backed securities, and loaning cash directly to banks and bank holding companies. Many of the distressed banks would not come forward to accept such loans publicly for fear of a bank run and loss of investors. As a result, the Federal Reserve developed a program for those banks and financial institutions to access the discount window which is not normally subject to publication.

As part of investigative reporting conducted by journalists Mark Pittman and Bob Ivry, Bloomberg L.P. was denied a request to the Federal Reserve, under the Freedom of Information Act, for disclosure of borrower banks and their collateral. Subsequently, a lawsuit was filed with United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on November 7, 2008 in order to force disclosure.

On August 24, 2009, Chief U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ruled that the Federal Reserve had until September 14 to disclose the information. Later, on August 27, the court agreed to the Fed's request to delay implementation of a ruling until the Court of Appeals acts on its appeal. It was given until no later than September 30, 2009 to obtain an appeals authorization. The case was successfully appealed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.March 19, 2010, a unanimous three judge panel of the appeals court ruled the Federal Reserve Board must release the documents. May 4, 2010, the Federal Reserve Board and The Clearing House Association L.L.C. appealed for a rehearing however, August 20, 2010, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit denied both requests. August 26, 2010, the Board filed a request to stay the judgement for appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. On August 26, 2010, the court agreed to delay implementation of the ruling until October 19 so that the Fed may appeal to the Supreme Court.The case was appealed but ultimately rejected on March 21, 2011. The Federal Reserve was required to release the data within five days to Bloomberg L.P.

Bloomberg Law

Bloomberg Law is a subscription-based service for online legal research. The service, which Bloomberg L.P. introduced in 2009, provides legal content, proprietary company information and news information to attorneys, law students, and other legal professionals. More specifically, this commercial legal and business technology platform integrates Bloomberg L.P. news with Bloomberg BNA's primary and secondary legal content and business development tools.

Bloomberg Markets

Bloomberg Markets is a monthly magazine published by Bloomberg L.P. as part of Bloomberg News. Aimed at global financial professionals, Bloomberg Markets publishes articles on the people and issues related to global financial markets. Bloomberg Markets, which is based in New York City, has readers in 147 countries. More than half of its readers live outside the U.S.As of December 2011, the magazine had a circulation of 375,000 and was available for sale at bookstores and selected newsstands. All subscribers of the Bloomberg Professional service and the Bloomberg Terminal also receive Bloomberg Markets as part of their subscription. Newsstand sales averaged 6,154 in 2010.

Andy Lack, chief executive officer (CEO) of Bloomberg Media Group launched Bloomberg West in 2011.The show focused on the topics of technology, innovation and business and was hosted by Emily Chang and Cory Johnson.

Before coming to Bloomberg Television, Chang was a CNN television host in Beijing. Co-host Cory Johnson, ran a hedge fund and reported on Silicon Valley for CNBC before joining Bloomberg Television.From its start in 2011, the show was recorded in Bloomberg’s San Francisco studio and aired daily at 6:00pm EST.Bloomberg West was named Bloomberg Technology as part of the launch of Bloomberg Technology as a "multi-platform brand" on October 5, 2016.

CFTE

CFTE (1410 AM) is a radio station located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. WNBP (1450 AM, 106.1 FM) is a radio station licensed to serve Newburyport, Massachusetts, United States and serving the Boston market. The station is owned by Bloomberg L.P.. The station carries financial news from Bloomberg Radio. WNBP is simulcast on a 90-watt FM translator at 106.1 MHz, W291CC, transmitting from Amesbury.

The station was assigned the WNBP call letters by the Federal Communications Commission on January 18, 1991.
