HVDC Moyle

The HVDC Moyle Interconnector is the 500 MW HVDC link between Auchencrosh, South Ayrshire in Scotland and Ballycronan More, County Antrim in Northern Ireland, which went into service in 2001. It is owned and operated by Mutual Energy.

Mutual Energy is a mutual company which manages the Moyle Interconnector (and some high pressure gas transmission assets including the Scotland - Northern Ireland Pipeline) for the benefit of Northern Ireland's energy consumers.

Work was completed in 2016 to replace the subsea sections of the LV return conductors with two new return cables. This was carried out by Nexans (Norway) with the aid of Morrows (N.I) and Romac Civil Engineering (N.I).

Specifications

The HVDC Moyle Interconnector has a capacity of 500 MW. It consists of two coaxial 250 kV DC cables with integrated return conductors (IRC), each cable having a transmission capacity of 250 MW. The IRCs have failed through the events below, and their function restored by laying separate return conductors.[1] The converter stations are equipped with light-triggered thyristors.[2]

The converter station at Auchencrosh is connected via a 64 kilometres (40 mi) single-circuit 275 kV overhead three-phase AC line, which is installed on delta-type pylon, to Coylton substation, where the connection with the high voltage grid of Great Britain takes place. The connection to Northern Ireland is then made through dual 63.5-kilometre (39.5 mi) long monopolar cables, of which 55 kilometres (34 mi) are submarine cables. The Ballycronan More converter station is connected into the Northern Ireland grid through two 275 kV circuits.

In August 2011, the interconnector went out of service.[3] Repairs were made[4] and the cable became operational again with 450 MW in February 2012.[5] However, further faults meant that a major part of the interconnector had to be taken out of service until it could be augmented with the additional return cables, completed in 2016. This restored capacity to the full 500 MW.[6]

In February 2017, the cable suffered another fault, halving capacity to 250 MW.[7] However full capacity was restored in September 2017, following repairs by Nexans.

Intraday capacity trading is not available, but is being discussed.[8]

Ballycronan More is a townland of 356 acres in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is situated in the civil parish of Islandmagee and the historic barony of Belfast Lower.The HVDC Moyle Interconnector is the HVDC link between Auchencrosh, South Ayrshire in Scotland and Ballycronan More, County Antrim, which went into service in 2001. It is owned and operated by Mutual Energy. The Static Inverter Plant is sited in Ballycronan More.

Ballylumford power station is a natural-gas-fired power station in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK. With its main plant generating 600 megawatts of electricity, it is Northern Ireland's largest power station and provides half of the province's power. Overall the station produces 1,316MW. The plant is located at the tip of the Islandmagee peninsula, which separates Larne Lough from the Irish Sea. The lough is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The 3 chimneys of the power station are 126 metres tall. East of the station is the static inverter plant of HVDC Moyle, a power cable connecting the system to Great Britain.

Malcolm Eccles

Malcolm Eccles (born 1969) is a utilities senior executive. Eccles is currently the Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of the Basslink group based in Melbourne, Australia. Eccles was born in Whitehaven, Cumbria. In addition to his work with Basslink, he also serves as a Non-executive director on the boards of City Gas (Singapore) and Gippsland Water (Australia). He has also been a director and Executive Committee member of the ICPC (International Cable Protection Committee) since 2007.

Eccles has been involved in HVDC and submarine cable technology since 2002. His engineering career commenced in 1986 when he served an apprenticeship with British Nuclear Fuels Ltd (BNFL). He stayed with BNFL for 16 years, leaving the organisation in 2002 to join Siemens PTD (power, transmission & distribution), now called Siemens Energy Sector. He worked with Siemens from 2002 until 2005 splitting his time between managing the O&M contract for the HVDC Moyle Interconnector and developing a services business. He joined Basslink in 2005 originally to recruit and train operational & engineering teams and too ensure the company was ready to operate in the Australian energy market.

National Grid plc sold the Basslink Interconector to CitySpring Infrastructure Trust on 31 August 2007. Eccles was appointed CEO of Basslink on 1 September 2007. Since his appointment as CEO Basslink group has grown and now includes a wholesale telecoms business and an engineering consultancy businesses.

Eccles is actively engaged in the activities of the ICPC (International Cable Protection Committee) & CIGRE (International Council on Large Electric Systems).

Eccles is also a non-executive director of Gippsland Water in Victoria, having been appointed to the board in 2011 by the Minister of Water.

During his time as CEO of Basslink Eccles has received pressure from government and shareholders to increase the reliability of the link, especially with the extended outage from December 2015 to June 2016 and another 2 month outage from March 2018 to May 2018. Eccles and his wife live in Melbourne, Victoria. Sharing their home with one cat and two motorcycles.

National Grid (Great Britain)

In the electricity sector in the United Kingdom the National Grid is the high-voltage electric power transmission network serving Great Britain, connecting power stations and major substations and ensuring that electricity generated anywhere on it can be used to satisfy demand elsewhere. The network covers the great majority of Great Britain and several of the surrounding islands. The GB grid is connected as a wide area synchronous grid nominally running at 50 Hertz. On the breakup of the Central Electricity Generating Board in 1990, the ownership and operation of the National Grid in England and Wales passed to National Grid Company plc, later to become National Grid Transco, and now National Grid plc. In Scotland the grid was already split into two separate entities, one for southern and central Scotland and the other for northern Scotland, connected by interconnectors. The first is owned and maintained by SP Energy Networks, a subsidiary of Scottish Power, and the other by SSE. However, National Grid plc continues to be the transmission system operator for the whole GB grid.
