Gaekwar's Baroda State Railway

Gaekwar's Baroda State Railway (GBSR) was a narrow gauge railway line owned by the Princely State of Baroda, which was ruled by the Gaekwar dynasty.

The railway track has the distinction of being the first narrow-gauge line to be laid in British India, and also the first railway to be owned by any Princely State of India. In 1862, Maharaja Khanderao Gaekwad, the Maharaja of Baroda, inaugurated 8 miles (13 km) of a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) railway line from Dabhoi to Miyagam. Oxen were used to haul the train, although in 1863, Nielson & Co. built a locomotive to be operated on the line from Dabhoi to Miyagram, as the 6.5 km/m rails were not suited for the regular use of an engine.

Later, during the rule of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the railway's network was further expanded. In 1873, the Dabhoi-Miyagam line (the first 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) line) was re-laid with stronger rails to allow locomotives to be used, rather than oxen. However, locomotives were not regularly used on the line until 1880. During the Maharaja's reign, railway network extended to Goyagate, Chandod, Bodeli and Samalaya Jn with Dabhoi as its focal point.

In 1949, the Gaikwad Baroda State Railway was merged with the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway which was subsequently merged in 1951 with other adjacent zones to form Western Railway.

Conversion to broad gauge

The Baroda State Railway is currently under conversion to broad gauge.[2]

It is located to south of Vadodara railway station, it falls under the Vadodara railway division of Western Railway. It is the largest of locomotive sheds in the Western Railway zone. The shed houses more than 130 locomotives, which include WAP-4, WAP-5, WAP-7, WAM-4 and WAG-5, WAG-9 locomotives.

Harsud railway station

Khanderao II Gaekwad

Shrimant Maharaja Sir Khanderao II Gaekwad, Sena Khas Khel Shamsher Bahadur, GCSI (1828–1870) was the Maharaja of Baroda State from 1856 to 1870.He was the third son of Shrimant Rajashri Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad II. He succeeded to the throne on the death of his eldest brother and the king Maharaja Ganpatrao Gaekwad on 19 November 1856 and reigned till his death on 28 November 1870. He was knighted as GCSI in 1861. He died suddenly in 1870 and was succeeded by his brother Malharrao Gaekwad but Malharrao was later deposed by British and widow of Kanderao II, Maharani Jamnabai Sahib Gaekwad, later adopted a boy from the related family, who became the next ruler of Baroda State - Sayajirao Gaekwad III.During his reign, the Baroda State started the narrow gauge railway, known as Gaekwar's Baroda State Railway. It was started in the year 1862.

Mumbai Port Trust Railway

The railway line was being utilized for grain and fuel depots and feeding the containers at the Bombay Port.The port trust lines were not just used for conveying cargo, but also carry passengers and troops during World War II. Saurashtra Railway

Saurashtra Railway came into being in April, 1948 with the amalgamation of state railways like Bhavnagar State Railway, Gondal Railway, Porbandar Railway, Jamnagar & Dwarka Railway, Morvi Railway, Dhrangadhra Railway, Okhamandal State Railway, Junagadh State Railway, Baria State Railway, Rajpipla Railway etc.Upon the independence of India and the merger of various Princely States into the Union of India, it became necessary to merge various State Railways owned by these Princely States into one. As the various states of Saurahstra and Kathiawar were merged to make Saurashtra State, the Government of India, similarly merged the various State Railways of Gujarat into a separate entity called Saurashtra Railway.

On 5 November 1951, Saurashtra Railway along with Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway, Rajputana Railway, Jaipur State Railway & Cutch State Railway were merged and Western Railway came into existence.

Western Railway zone

The Western Railway (abbreviated WR and परे) is one of the seventeen zones of Indian Railways, and is among the busiest railway networks in India. Zankhvav (also spelled Zankvav or Zankhavav) is a small town-cum-railway station in Surat District, Gujarat, India. It falls under Surat Metropolitan Region. It is 60 km (37 mi) from district town of Surat. The nearest town, Kosamba, is 17 km (11 mi) away.

Zankvav is also the terminus station of the Kosamba - Zankhvav railway line. This railway line was built by Gaekwar's Baroda State Railway in 1900 as a narrow-gauge line. However, the train now runs on broad gauge. The station code is ZKV.

The State Highway 166 Kosamba-Velachha-Mangrol-Vankal-Zankhvav Road connects Zankvav to other cities.

The Postal Index Code of Zankhvav is 394440.Zankhvav has a high school, Shantiniketan High School, which started in 1963. The town has a Community Health Center and an Industrial Training Institute.
