FIA Formula 3 European Championship

The FIA Formula 3 European Championship was a European Formula Three auto racing competition, organised by the FIA.

After one season of the FIA Formula 3 International Trophy, the FIA revived the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.[1] The ten-event season included seven Formula 3 Euro Series rounds, two British Formula Three rounds and DTM-supporting round at Brands Hatch. From 2013, the series started running its own rounds, based upon the defunct Formula 3 Euro Series.

In 2019, the series merged with the GP3 Series to form the FIA Formula 3 Championship, and was due to relaunch as the Formula European Masters[2][3] and run in support of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters.[4]. The championship was cancelled ahead of its debut season due to lack of competitors. The championship would have used the current spec cars[5] and were working with Dallara to design a new car for 2020.[6]

Car history and current specifications

Chassis

The FIA Formula 3 European Championship is a third-tier single-seater formula car. A spec-series, the championship mandates chassis and engine manufacturers which teams must use each season. The championship controls and specifies the chassis and engine manufacturers that teams are allowed to use each season. The league's choice of manufacturers are changed every three years. Currently, Dallara provides a specification chassis to all teams since inaugural season. Teams are prohibited from performing engine or chassis modifications. The current Dallara F317 features an airboxless roll hoop and also side air intake on upside sidepod. The chassis construction of Dallara F317 car are carbon-fibre monocoque incorporated with honeycomb structure. The Dallara F317 also includes bi-plane front wing, bi-plane rear wing and also lower nose (similar to current Formula One cars)

Transmission, gearbox and clutches

For the transmission gearboxes, all FIA Formula 3 European cars currently use a semi-automatic transmission with 6-speed gearbox operated by paddle shifters since the 2012 season. The clutch of all FIA Formula 3 European cars are CFRP 3-plate clutch operated by foot-pedal. Mechanical limited-slip differential are also allowed and constant velocity joint tripod driveshafts are also used. The transmission fluid supplier is currently the RAVENOL F3 Gear premium oil.

Brakes

AP Racing supplies monobloc brake calipers, cast-iron brake discs, pads and disc bells, which are exclusive to all FIA Formula 3 European cars.

Wheel rims

ATS exclusively supplies wheel rims for all FIA Formula 3 European cars since the inaugural 2012 season. The wheel rims of all FIA Formula 3 European cars are made of magnesium alloy wheels.

Tyres

Hankook is currently the sole tyre supplier for the series since the 2012 season until at least 2019. The FIA Formula 3 European tyres runs the bespoke compounds and smaller size since 2012. The front tyre sizes are 180/550-R13 and the rear tyre sizes are 240/570 R13.

Cockpit and other safety components

For the safety equipment, all FIA Formula 3 European cars seating uses removable carbon-fibre shell driver's seat with 6-point seat belts. The steering wheel of all FIA Formula 3 European cars are universally supplied by XAP Technologies. All FIA Formula 3 European cars are also equipped with XAP data display units since the 2012 season.

Rear view mirrors for all FIA Formula 3 European cars are fully mandated to easily view opponents behind.

Fuel tank

The fuel tank of all FIA Formula 3 European cars are made of kevlar-reinforced rubber safety tank supplied by ATL with FT3 standard. Currently the fuel tank capacity of all FIA Formula 3 European cars are 45 litres (12 US gallons) since 2012.

Other components

All FIA Formula 3 European cars carry a Bosch-provided electronic control unit (Motronic MS 5.8 model), but traction control and anti-lock brakes are prohibited. Live telemetry is used only for television broadcasts, but the data can be recorded from the ECU to the computer if the car is in the garage and not on the track.

Engines

The cars are powered by naturally-aspirated (no turbocharger or supercharger) direct fuel injection inline-4 engines, with aluminium alloy blocks, and a DOHC valvetrain actuating four-valves per cylinder, and limited to 2.0 L (122 cu in) displacement since the series' inauguration in 2012. DTM car's engines are currently producing over 240 hp (179 kW) power output between 5,000-7,400 rpm. Currently Mercedes-AMG (operated by Mercedes-AMG HPP) and Volkswagen providing the engines currently maximum three teams per one manufacturer. ThreeBond Nissan and Neil Brown Engineering has provided engines in 2012-2016 and 2014-2016 but both companies left at the end of the 2016 season respectively due to competitor reduction to 19 cars.

FIA Formula 3 European engines are rev-limited to 7,400 rpm. The valve train is a dual overhead camshaft configuration with four valves per cylinder. The crankshaft is made of alloy steel, with five main bearing caps. The pistons are forged aluminum alloy, while the connecting rods are machined alloy steel. The firing ignition is a CDI ignition system. The engine lubrication is a dry sump type, cooled by a single water pump.

Engines must be built from a production model block (stock block), and often must be sealed by race or series organizers, so no private tuning can be carried out.

Spark plugs

All FIA Formula 3 European cars carried a spark plugs are made of iridium and supplied exclusively by Bosch since 2012.

Exhaust systems

The exhaust systems of all FIA Formula 3 European cars are silencer type but made by titanium with operation of three-way catalytic converter. Currently Remus are providing the exhaust systems.

Fuel

FIA Formula 3 European cars currently use ordinary unleaded racing fuel, which has been the de facto standard in European third-tier single-seater formula racing since Formula 3 Euroseries in 2003 and the formation of FIA Formula 3 European in 2012. Since the 2005 Formula 3 Euroseries season, per agreement with ITR e.V., which has promoted the series from that to FIA European Formula 3 and later Formula European Masters, BP is the official fuel supplier using their German Aral Ultimate brand

Current Aral Ultimate 102 RON unleaded gasoline resembles the ordinary unleaded public vehicles gasoline which has better mileage, environmental-friendly and safer than other fuels.

Lubricants

The current lubricant supplier of all FIA Formula 3 European cars is Ravenol.

Performance

According to research and pre-season stability tests, the current model can go 0 to 60 mph in approximately 3 seconds. The car has a top speed of over 160 mph (257 km/h) depending on the circuit and gearing meaning that it is the fourth fastest single-seater formula car behind Formula 1, Formula 2 and GP3 Series.

Specifications

Race format

Following two practice sessions, the first of two qualifying sessions will be held on Friday afternoon. Race 1 starts on Saturday morning, while Qualifying 2 is usually scheduled for the afternoon. On Sunday, the two remaining races will be held, with Race 2 taking off on Sunday morning and Race 3 concluding the weekend in the afternoon. Each race will consist of 33 minutes plus one lap and covers a distance of about 100 kilometres.[7]

The 2012 FIA Formula 3 European Championship was the first edition of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. It began at Hockenheim on 28 April, and finished on 21 October at the same venue after ten meetings, held jointly with the Formula 3 Euro Series and the British Formula Three Championship.

2015 FIA Formula 3 European Championship

The 2015 FIA Formula 3 European Championship was a multi-event motor racing championship for single-seat open wheel formula racing cars that was held across Europe. The championship featured drivers competing in two-litre Formula Three racing cars which conform to the technical regulations, or formula, for the championship. It was the fourth edition of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship .

Esteban Ocon was the reigning drivers' champion, but he did not defend his title as he moved across to the GP3 Series. His team, Prema Powerteam, was the defending winners of the teams' championship.

2016 FIA Formula 3 European Championship

The 2016 FIA Formula 3 European Championship was a multi-event motor racing championship for single-seat open wheel formula racing cars that is held across Europe. The championship features drivers competing in two-litre Formula Three racing cars which conform to the technical regulations, or formula, for the championship. It is the fifth edition of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.

Felix Rosenqvist was the defending drivers' champion, but was unable to defend his title, because of a new rule which determined that drivers could spend no more than three years in the category. His team, Prema Powerteam, were the defending winners of the teams' championship.

2016 was the final season that the Dallara F312 chassis package, which débuted in the 2012 season, was used in competition, as a brand new chassis package was introduced for 2017.

2017 FIA Formula 3 European Championship

The 2017 FIA Formula 3 European Championship is a multi-event motor racing championship for third-tier single-seat open wheel formula racing cars that is held across Europe. The championship featured drivers competing in two-litre Formula Three racing cars which conform to the technical regulations, or formula, for the championship. It was the sixth edition of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.

The season saw the début of the Dallara F317 chassis package. Although it is only an aero-upgraded F312 chassis, the F317 was built as a replacement for the aging F312 chassis package which débuted in the first season of the championship back in 2012.

Prema Powerteam successfully defended the teams' championship for the fifth time in row. While the drivers' and rookies' title was secured with two races to spare by Carlin's driver Lando Norris. He became the first non-Prema driver to win the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. Joel Eriksson on his second year with Motopark improved his performance to the runner-up place in the standings. While Prema's Maximilian Günther was not able to get better in the championship, but remained in the top-three at the end of the season. His teammate Callum Ilott was the last driver who was a championship contender and won on the different types of circuits. Jake Hughes, Jehan Daruvala and Ferdinand Habsburg took their wins at Nürburgring, Norisring and Spa respectively. Guanyu Zhou, Ralf Aron and Nikita Mazepin completed the top-ten in the standings and all of them had more than one podium.

2018 FIA Formula 3 European Championship

The 2018 FIA Formula 3 European Championship was the seventh and final season of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, a multi-event motor racing championship for third-tier single-seat open wheel formula racing cars that is held across Europe. The championship features drivers competing in two-litre Formula 3 racing cars which conform to the technical regulations, or formula, for the championship. Teams and drivers competed in ten rounds, running in support of a variety of European motorsport championships including the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup and the FIA World Endurance Championship.

As the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and GP3 Series are planned to merge and form the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2019, 2018 was the final year that the championship was run since its formation in 2012.Mick Schumacher won the championship on his second season. He took the championship lead after win in the first Spielberg race and held it until the second Hockenheim race, where he clinched the title. Dan Ticktum was the championship leader after first Hungaroring race and from finish of the first Silverstone race till the finish of the first Spielberg race but he scored only 42 out of 150 possible points in the final two rounds, losing the title battle by 59 points. Robert Shwartzman won the rookies' championship and completed the top-three in the driver's standings ahead of another Ferrari Driver Academy members Marcus Armstrong and Guanyu Zhou. Armstrong was placed behind Jüri Vips in both Drivers' and Rookies' standings. While fellow Estonian driver Ralf Aron was behind Armstrong in the driver standings. Prema Theodore Racing successfully defended the teams' championship title, winning over Motopark with one round to spare, and maintaining their record of being the only team to have won the teams' championship since the FIA Formula 3 European Championship was launched in 2012.Champion Mick Schumacher take 8 wins - in Belgium, Italy, Great Britain. He has a hat-trick in Nürburgring - and he wins two races in Red Bull Ring. He losing only in third race to his teammate, Robert Shvartzman. Antonio Fuoco

Antonio Fuoco (born 20 May 1996) is a professional Italian racing driver who currently serves as a development driver for the Scuderia Ferrari Formula One team. He previously competed in Formula 2 for Charouz Racing System, and was a former member of the Ferrari Driver Academy.

Antonio Giovinazzi

Antonio Giovinazzi (born 14 December 1993) is an Italian racing driver currently competing in Formula One for Alfa Romeo Racing. He was the 2015 FIA Formula 3 European Championship runner-up and raced with Prema in the 2016 International GP2 Series, again finishing runner-up with five wins and eight overall podiums. Giovinazzi was chosen by Scuderia Ferrari to be their third and reserve driver for the 2017 season. He made his competitive début for Sauber at the 2017 Australian Grand Prix, replacing the injured Pascal Wehrlein. He also replaced Wehrlein at the following Chinese Grand Prix as Wehrlein continued his recovery. Giovinazzi signed a contract to race full-time for Alfa Romeo Racing in 2019.

Dan Ticktum

Daniel Ticktum (born 8 June 1999) is a British racing driver. He won the Macau Grand Prix in 2017 and 2018, and finished second in the 2018 FIA Formula 3 European Championship. Ticktum was awarded the prestigious BRDC McLaren Autosport Award in 2017, and was named Autosport National Driver of the Year in 2018.

Ticktum was a member of the Red Bull Junior Team from 2017 to 2019. In 2019, he competed in the first three rounds of the Super Formula Championship in Japan before being dropped by his team.

George Russell (racing driver)

Guanyu Zhou

As part of the Renault Sport Academy, he currently serves as the development driver for the Renault Formula One Team. He was a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy from 2015 to 2018, and served as the development driver for Formula E team DS Techeetah in 2018.Zhou started his single seater career in 2015, competing in the Italian F4 Championship and ADAC Formula 4 with Prema Racing. After finding success in the Italian F4 Championship, he moved up to the European Formula 3 Championship with Motopark in 2016 and Prema Racing in 2017 and 2018.

Jüri Vips (born 10 August 2000) is an Estonian racing driver, 2017 ADAC Formula 4 champion and member of the Red Bull Junior Team.

Lando Norris

Lando Norris (born 13 November 1999) is a British racing driver currently competing in Formula One, for McLaren. He won the MSA Formula championship in 2015, and the Toyota Racing Series, Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup in 2016. He also received the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award that year. He subsequently won the 2017 FIA Formula 3 European Championship. He was a member of the McLaren young driver programme.

Mick Schumacher

Mick Schumacher (German pronunciation: [ˈmɪk ˈʃuːmaxɐ]; born 22 March 1999) is a German racing driver, currently competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship with Prema Theodore Racing and being affiliated to the Ferrari Driver Academy. He began his career in karting in 2008, progressing to the German ADAC Formula 4 by 2015. Mick most recently competed in the 2018 FIA F3 European Championship, which he won. He is the son of seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher, nephew of former Formula One driver Ralf Schumacher, stepnephew Sebastian Stahl, and grandson of Elizabeth and Rolf Schumacher.

Ralf Aron

Ralf Aron (born 21 March 1998) is an Estonian racing driver, who competed in the Italian F4 Championship, ADAC Formula 4 and European Formula 3 championships for Prema Powerteam and Hitech GP.

His younger brother Paul is also a racing driver and member of the Mercedes F1 junior programme.

Robert Shwartzman

Robert Mikhailovich Shwartzman (Russian: Ро́берт Миха́йлович Шва́рцман, IPA: [ˈrobʲert mʲɪˈxajləvʲɪtɕ ˈʂvartsmɐn], born 16 September 1999) is a Russian racing driver currently competing in the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
