Deputy Chief of Army

The Deputy Chief of Army (DCA) is the second most senior appointment in the Australian Army, responsible to the Chief of Army (CA). The rank associated with the position is major general (2-star).

The current appointee is Major General Anthony Rawlins who took up his posting in December 2018, succeeding Jake Ellwood who had served as the Deputy Chief of Army from May 2018.[1]

2006 Vladikavkaz Mi-8 crash

The 2006 Russian military Mil Mi-8 crash near Vladikavkaz killed 12 Russian military men, mostly high-ranking officers, among them Lieutenant-General Pavel Yaroslavtsev, deputy chief for army logistics, Lieutenant-General Viktor Guliaev, deputy chief of army medical units, and Major-General Vladimir Sorokin.

The Ossetian rebel group Kataib al-Khoul claimed responsibility for shooting down the helicopter.

62 Cavalry (India)

The 62nd Cavalry is an Armoured Regiment of the Indian Army and was raised by Lt Col RS Butalia on 31 Mar 1957 at Ambala Cantonment. Drawn from the existing cavalry regiments of the time, the 62nd Cavalry is recruited from the Sikh, Jat and Dogra communities.

The Regiment was born as the first Armoured Regiment to be raised in Independent India and was the First Indian Armoured Regiment to be raised entirely on Tanks. In its ninth year, the 62nd Cavalry took part in the 1965 War against Pakistan. The regiment, equipped with obsolete Sherman tanks fought modern Pakistani Patton tanks and outgunned and out-tanked them. The Regiment was honoured by President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy during its silver Jubilee when he presented a Guidon to them on 31 March 1981.The Regiment celebrated its Golden Jubilee with a mounted parade reviewed by the Chief of Army Staff on 31 March 2006. During the parade the COAS bestowed the Regiment with a Standard in recognition of its achievements. The celebrations were attended by the Chief Minister of Punjab, Capt. Amarinder Singh, in recognition of the services rendered by 62nd Cavalry personnel who hail from Punjab apart from Lt Gen GD Singh, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (P&S), the Colonel of the Regiment of 62 CAVALRY.

Abdirisaq Khalif Hussein

General Abdirisaq Khalif Hussein (Somali: Cabdirisaaq Khaliif Xuseen, Arabic: عبد الرزاق خليف حسين‎) is a Somali military commander. He is the Deputy Chief of the Somali National Army, having been appointed to the position on 13 March 2013 in place of Abdikarin Yusuf Dhega Badan. General Dahir Adan Elmi was concurrently named as the new Chief of Army. Khalif's term as Deputy Chief of Army ended on 25 June 2014, when he and Elmi were transferred by presidential decree to other positions. The shuffle was part of a larger major national security reform. Khalif was succeeded as Deputy Chief of Army by General Abdullahi Osman Agey, with General Abdullahi Anod concurrently appointed as the new Chief of Army.

Abdullahi Anod

General Abdullahi Anod (Somali: Cabdulaahi Caanood, Arabic: عبد الله عنود‎) is a Somali military leader. He is a former commander of Somalia's presidential guard unit. On 25 June 2014, Anod was appointed the new Chief of the Somali National Army. He replaced General Dahir Adan Elmi at the position. General Abdullahi Osman Agey was concurrently named as Anod's new Deputy Chief of Army.

Angus Campbell (general)

General Angus John Campbell, is a senior officer in the Australian Army, serving as the Chief of the Defence Force since 6 July 2018. He was previously posted as Commander Operation Sovereign Borders from September 2013 until he was appointed Chief of Army in May 2015.

DRDO Anti Tank Missile

The DRDO Anti-tank missile (ATM) is a first generation wire-guided missile developed in India by Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It has a subsonic speed up to 300 ft/s (91 m/s) with a range of 1.6 km and carries a 106 mm HEAT warhead.

David Morrison

Lieutenant General David Lindsay Morrison (born 24 May 1956) is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He served as Chief of Army from June 2011 until his retirement in May 2015. He was named Australian of the Year for 2016.

Gus Gilmore

Major General Peter Warwick "Gus" Gilmore, (born 31 January 1962) is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. A graduate of the Royal Military College, Duntroon, he was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps in 1983 and spent much of his career in special forces. He commanded the Special Air Service Regiment (2001–02), led the first contingent of the Australian Special Operations Task Group in Afghanistan (2001–02), was responsible for the Coalition Advisory Support Team in Iraq (2005–06), and commanded International Security Assistance Force Special Operations Forces (2009–10). Following promotion to major general he held a succession of senior appointments, including Special Operations Commander Australia (2011–13), Deputy Chief of Army (2013–15), and Commander Forces Command (2015–16). His final appointment was as Head Military Strategic Commitments Division from 2016 to 2019.

Ian Gordon (general)

Major General Ian Campbell Gordon, (born 20 March 1952) is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He had a long and distinguished career culminating as Deputy Chief of Army (2004–2006) and Head of Mission of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (2006–2008).

Iqroop Singh Ghuman

Lieutenant General Iqroop Singh Ghuman, PVSM, AVSM is the current Deputy Chief of Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Information Systems & Training) of the Indian Army, having assumed office in 2018.

Prior to this, he was the Commander, XXI Corps of the Indian Army and assumed office, 1 July 2017 onwards. He assumed the post from Lt General Cherish Mathson.

Major General John Patrick Cantwell, (born 9 October 1956) is a retired senior Australian Army officer.

Kunhiraman Palat Candeth

Kunhiraman Palat Candeth (Hindi: के पी कंडेथ; 23 October 1916 – 19 May 2003), best known as K. P. Candeth, was a senior army officer in the Indian Army who played a commanding role in annexation of Goa from Portuguese control in 1961, and briefly tenured as the Lieutenant Governor in Goa.

He later served as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff based on GHQ in New Delhi at the midst of the second war in 1965, and later effectively commanded the Western Command during the third war with Pakistan in 1971.

Paul Symon

Major General Paul Bruce Symon, (born 1960) is the Director-General of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service since 18 December 2017. A retired senior Australian Army officer, Symon served as Director of the Defence Intelligence Organisation from 2011 to 2014 and as Deputy Chief of Army from 2009 to 2011.

Peter Abigail

Major General Peter John Abigail, (born 6 April 1948) is a retired Australian Army officer who held a number of senior commands, including Deputy Chief of Army (1998–2000) and Land Commander Australia (2000–2002). Following his retirement from the army, Abigail served as the Executive Director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute from 2005 until 2011. He also served as a member of the three-person Ministerial Advisory Panel for the 2009 Defence White Paper.

Peter Leahy

Lieutenant General Peter Francis Leahy AC (born 30 October 1952) is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army, whose military career culminated with his appointment as Chief of the Army from 2002 until 2008. He has been director of the National Security Institute, University of Canberra, since October 2008.

Rick Burr

Lieutenant General Richard Maxwell "Rick" Burr, (born 2 June 1964) is a senior officer in the Australian Army and the current Chief of Army since 2 July 2018. He served as Commander 1st Division from 2011 to 2012, Deputy Commanding General – Operations, United States Army Pacific from January 2013 to November 2014, and Deputy Chief of Army from 2015 to 2018. He was the first foreign general to be given a service component command within the United States Army.

Shravan Kumar Patyal

Lieutenant General Shravan Kumar Patyal, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM is the current Deputy Chief of Army Staff (DCOAS) of the Indian Army and assumed office on 31 March 2017. He assumed the post after Lt General Subrata Saha retired from office.

Lieutenant General Zameer Uddin Shah, PVSM, SM, VSM is a retired Three-Star General of the Indian Army. He last served as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Personnel & Systems), Indian Army. After retirement, he served for some time as an administrative member on the bench of the Armed Forces Tribunal. He was the Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University.
