Civil Aviation Flight University of China

Civil Aviation Flight University of China (abbreviated CAFUC) is the largest civil aviation university in Asia and the world's largest flight training institution. It is under the direct leadership of Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). With its motto of Lofty Aspiration, Far-reaching Flight, Profound Knowledge and Great Perseverance, CAFUC describes itself as being dedicated to academic excellence, the well-being to Chinese civil aviation development. Consistently ranked as the top civil aviation institution in China, CAFUC enjoys the reputations of "the Cradle of Chinese Civil Aviation Pilots".[1][2]

CAFUC is the only full-time regular institution of higher education mainly for civil aviation pilots and controllers, from which nearly 90% civil aviation captains and 50% air traffic controllers graduated. With its headquarter located in Guanghan City, Sichuan Province, CAFUC, covering a total area of 10.66 square kilometers (2636 acres), owns five airports as its sub-colleges for flight training, which are Xinjin Airport, Guanghan Airport, Luoyang Airport, Mianyang Airport, and Suining Airport.[1]

CAFUC is the first integrate institution for Private Pilot License (PPL), Commercial Pilot License (CPL) and Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL). Authorized by Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), it's also the training and test center of examiners for International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) license tests for pilots and air traffic controllers. CAFUC also offers technological supports for the Legislation of Chinese Civil Aviation.[1]

CAFUC was founded on May 26, 1956 by Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in the name of Aviation College of CAAC. On September 22 of the same year, CAFUC was transferred to the administration of Chinese National Defense and named after The 14th Aviation College of People's Liberation Army (PLA). On October 25, 1963, CAFUC became Advanced Chinese Civil Aviation College after a negotiation and discussion between CAAC and Chinese Air Force. On May 19, 1971, CAFUC was again brought into the system of Chinese Air Force. In 1980, CAFUC returned to the administration of CAAC and was listed among the colleges for higher education. Since December 15, 1987, CAFUC has been entitled as Civil Aviation Flight University of China.[1]

Today CAFUC has more than 16,000 full-time students, 5 airports and 262 airplanes. There are more than 3300 faculties and 1300 teachers working in CAFUC. Among them there are more than 400 people who enjoy respectful titles such as first-class pilot, honored pilot, winner of special government allowance, expert in ICAO and senior engineer. CAFUC is the largest civil aviation university in Asia and has contributed more than 100,000 graduates for civil aviation of China as well as of other Asian and African countries.[1]


Besides covering a total area of 10.66 square kilometers (2636 acres), CAFUC also possesses various valuable facilities for education, worthing more than 6.2 billion Yuan (1 billion US dollars):[3]

5 airports for flight training purpose, among which both Luoyang Airport and Mianyang Airport are also served as commercial airports with more than 1 million registered passenger traffic and total traffic movements;[3]

In total 262 airplanes for different training levels and 45 sets of 360 degrees flight simulators;[3]

The exclusively state-of-the-art air traffic control system with 360-degree full view built in the ATC tower building in campus;[1][3]

More than 400 aircraft engines;[3]

The largest library of civil aviation in China with more than 1 million books, more than 3 million e-books and 33 international database.[3]


CAFUC has in total 7 key labs including key national bases for scientific research of flight technology and aviation safety, digital simulation research lab (cooperate with Wisesoft Co.,Ltd.) and key research lab for flight in plateau. In recent 5 years, CAFUC has launched 33 national projects such as ‘the 863 project’, Major Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China and Major Program of National Philosophy and Social Science Foundation of China, and won more than 127 national prizes in science and technology.[1]

International Collaboration

CAFUC has received international students from countries in Asia and Africa since early 1960s, from which more than 6000 international students preparing to become pilots, air traffic controllers and maintenance personnel have achieved their graduation. Since then, CAFUC has established wide connections with a wealth of international organizations and companies including ICAO, IATA, FAA, Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA), Boeing, Airbus, EADS, SNECMA, GE and IAE. Since the year 2000, more than 5000 students have studied abroad in the US, UK and Australia. Currently there are about 25 visiting scholars from all over the world.[1]

College of Flight Technology mainly conducts theoretical teaching for junior pilot students as well as for inflight pilots. Currently, the college has more than 80 faculty members which are involved in 4 teaching groups: Flight mechanics, Basis of flight technology, Aviation psychology and Navigation. Meanwhile, it has been a leading power in the research of flight technologies, security and human factors. The college is also home to some research/teaching labs including Flight simulation, Psychology of pilots, Wind tunnel and Advanced navigation technologies.

Aviation Engineering Institute (AEI), established in April 2005, is an institute for education of aviation engineers and R&D of aviation technologies. Over ten years' development, AEI, from the beginning of ~300 students and ~30 faculty members, has transformed into the largest education and research college/institute within CAFUC including ~3000 students and ~200 faculty members. Among the faculty, the lead design engineer of Shaanxi Y-8, consulting adviser of Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), and graduates from top engineering institutes around the world are included. As such, AEI has contributed the largest portion to research funding within CAFUC and established research labs for technologies, including composites, wireless charging, virtual reality, real-time monitoring and non-destructive inspection. Graduates from AEI can now be found all over Chinese aviation industries and some aviation companies in the world including MTU Aero Engines, GE, FEDEX and so on. AEI collaborates with other aviation institutes and companies, such as GE & SNECMA (Aero engine center), University of Washington at Seattle & Northwestern Polytechnical University (composite maintenance and certification center), and Eurocopter (helicopter training program).

Cirrus SR20

The Cirrus SR20 is an American piston-engine, four-or-five-seat, composite monoplane built by Cirrus Aircraft of Duluth, Minnesota since 1999.

The SR20 was the first production general aviation aircraft equipped with a parachute to lower the airplane safely to the ground after a loss of control, structural failure or mid-air collision. It was also the first manufactured light aircraft with all-composite construction and flat-panel avionics.The SR20 led to the Cirrus SR22 in 2001, which is one of the most produced aircraft of the 21st century.

Civil Aviation Administration of China

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC; simplified Chinese: 中国民用航空局; traditional Chinese: 中國民用航空局; pinyin: Zhōngguó Mínyòng Hángkōng Jú), formerly the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (simplified Chinese: 中国民用航空总局; traditional Chinese: 中國民用航空總局; pinyin: Zhōngguó Mínyòng Hángkōng Zǒngjú), is the aviation authority under the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China. It oversees civil aviation and investigates aviation accidents and incidents. Civil Aviation University of China

Civil Aviation University of China (CAUC, simplified Chinese: 中国民航大学; traditional Chinese: 中國民航大學; pinyin: Zhōngguó Mínháng Dàxué) is a national university in Tianjin, China under the Civil Aviation Administration of China. The university was established in 1951 to provide civil aviation tertiary education and training for new pilots in China. With special focus on the higher education of civil aviation engineering and management, it has been developed as the main institute in these fields. It is next to the Tianjin Binhai International Airport. CAUC consists of two campus, the northern and the southern campuses, with a total area 1.03 million m2.


Guanghan (simplified Chinese: 广汉; traditional Chinese: 廣漢; pinyin: Guǎnghàn) is a county-level city in Deyang, Sichuan province, China, and only 23 kilometres (14 miles) from Chengdu. The predominant industries are tourism, pharmaceuticals and the supply of building material.

Guanghan has an area of 538 km2 (208 sq mi), a population of 590,000, with urban population of 170,000. A major part of the tourism is the nearby Sanxingdui ruins. Guanghan Airport

Guanghan Airport (Chinese: 广汉机场) (IATA: GHN, ICAO: ZUGH) is an airport southeast of Guanghan, Sichuan, China. Formerly a military airfield known as Kwanghan Airfield (A-3) during World War II. It is now used by Civil Aviation Flight University of China for pilot training and has no commercial flights.

In 2009, Luoyang airport was the 4th busiest airport in China in terms of traffic movement. This is mainly because the airport houses an exercising terminal of Civil Aviation Flight University of China.

Mianyang Nanjiao Airport (Chinese: 绵阳南郊机场) (IATA: MIG, ICAO: ZUMY) is an airport serving the city of Mianyang in Sichuan Province, China. It is located in the southern suburbs of Mianyang (Nanjiao means "southern suburbs" in Chinese), 10 kilometers from the city center.Opened on 28 April 2001, Mianyang Nanjiao is the second largest airport in Sichuan after Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. The airport is also used for pilot training by the Civil Aviation Flight University of China.In 2011 Mianyang Nanjiao Airport served 622,816 passengers, ranking 66th among China's airports. It also handled 4,491.5 tons of cargo and 207,140 aircraft movements.

Si Xianmin

Si Xianmin (simplified Chinese: 司献民; traditional Chinese: 司獻民; pinyin: Sī Xiànmín; born November 1957) is a former Chinese business executive who served as chairman and general manager of China Southern Airlines, the world's sixth-largest airline measured by passengers carried and Asia's largest airline in fleet size and passengers carried. Si Xiamin spent more than 20 years in China Southern Airlines. He was a delegate to the 12th National People's Congress. In November 2015, he was placed under investigation by the Chinese Communist Party's anti-corruption agency. He is the first head of civil aviation in China implicated since the beginning of Xi Jinping's anti-corruption drive after he took power in late 2012.


Sichuan (四川; formerly romanised as Szechuan or Szechwan), is a province in southwest China occupying most of the Sichuan Basin and the easternmost part of the Tibetan Plateau between the Jinsha River on the west, the Daba Mountains in the north, and the Yungui Plateau to the south. Sichuan's capital city is Chengdu. The population of Sichuan stands at 81 million.

It suffered gravely during the Great Chinese Famine of 1959–61 but remained China's most populous province until Chongqing Municipality was again separated from it in 1997.

Xian MA60

The Xian MA60 (新舟60, Xīnzhōu liùshí, "Modern Ark 60") is a turboprop-powered airliner produced by China's Xi'an Aircraft Industrial Corporation under the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). The MA60 is a stretched version of the Xian Y7-200A, which was produced based on the An-24 to operate in rugged conditions with limited ground support and has short take-off and landing (STOL) capability.The airplane received its type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China in June 2000. The MA60 has not applied for FAA(US) and EASA(Europe) type certification, and is not certified for use in the European Union or the US. The general designer of MA-60 series is Lü Hai (吕海).

As of October 2006, XAC has received over 90 MA60 orders. The factory had delivered 23 MA60s by the end of 2006, and expects to deliver an additional 165 by the end of 2016.

Xian MA600

The Xian MA600 (MA for 新舟, "Modern Ark") is an improved version of the Xian MA60 manufactured by the Xi'an Aircraft Industry Corporation under the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).

Xi'an Aircraft Industry Corporation rolled out its first MA600 turboprop on the 29 June 2008. MA600 made its maiden flight on 10 October 2008. The aircraft is equipped with new avionics, improved passenger cabin and engines with increased thrust when compared to MA60.Powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127J turboprop engines, it has a 60-passenger capacity.

As of October 2008, Xi'an has received 136 orders from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Liu Jieyin, President of Okay Airways is quoted as saying that his company had purchased the new model.Xi'an Aircraft Industry Co., manufacturer of the MA600, noted that the successful test flight is "an important milestone" in Chinese domestic aircraft production. MD Meng Xiangkai revealed that the aircraft is expected to obtain its airworthiness certificate and enter service in the second half of 2009, with the first delivery to the Civil Aviation Flight University of China in Sichuan Province. Batch delivery will start in 2010.The aircraft will be equipped with the Becker-Communications "DVCS6100 Digital Intercom System,Cabin Intercommunication and Passenger Address". The cockpit is equipped with the Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics suite.

Yang Yuanyuan

Yang Yuanyuan (Chinese: 杨元元; born August 1950) is a Chinese retired pilot, aviation executive, aviation and safety regulator, and politician. He served as Director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) from 2002 to 2007 and Deputy Director of the State Administration of Work Safety from 2007 to 2015. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Flight Safety Foundation in 2006 for the significant reduction in China's aviation accident rate under his leadership.
