Chongqing North railway station is a railway station located in Yubei District, Chongqing City, People's Republic of China. It is served by the Yuhuai Railway, Suining–Chongqing Railway and Yuli Railway, and operated by the China Railway Corporation.

Prior to the construction of this station at its present site, Shapingba railway station was known as Chongqing North railway station. It was subsequently renamed to avoid confusion and to better reflect the geographic nature of both stations.


This station consists of two separate departure halls; the eastern hall is for long distance services and the western hall is for high-speed CRH trains. Arrivals are through a common underground hall.

Service at this station is separated into North and South Courses. The South Course handles long distance trains to many parts of China. The North Course is currently being expanded and will handle mostly high-speed intercity services.

There is also access to the Chongqing Metro's Line 3, via South Square of Chongqingbei Railway Station station.


This station currently handles most long-distance train services to and from Chongqing, whilst Chongqing railway station is closed for renovations (due to finish in 2015). It is also the main high-speed railway connection to Chengdu via Suining.

Chongqing (, also US: , Chinese: [ʈʂʰʊ̌ŋ.tɕʰîŋ] (listen)), formerly romanized as Chungking, is a major city in southwest China. Administratively, it is one of China's four municipalities under the direct administration of central government (the other three are Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin), and the only such municipality in China located far away from the coast.Chongqing was a municipality during the Republic of China (ROC) administration, serving as its wartime capital during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945); during this period, Chongqing was listed as one of the world's four anti-fascist command centers, along with Washington, London and Moscow. The current municipality was recreated on 14 March 1997 to help develop the central and western parts of China. The Chongqing administrative municipality has a population of over 30 million, spread over an area the size of Austria. The city of Chongqing made of 9 urban districts has a much smaller population of 8,518,000 as of 2016 estimation. According to the 2010 census, Chongqing is the most populous Chinese municipality, and also the largest direct-controlled municipality in China, containing 26 districts, eight counties, and four autonomous counties.

The official abbreviation of the city, "Yu" (渝), was approved by the State Council on 18 April 1997. This abbreviation is derived from the old name of a part of the Jialing River that runs through Chongqing and feeds into the Yangtze River.

Chongqing has a significant history and culture. Being one of China's National Central Cities, it serves as the economic centre of the upstream Yangtze basin. It is a major manufacturing centre and transportation hub; a July 2012 report by the Economist Intelligence Unit described it as one of China's "13 emerging megalopolises".

Chongqing Rail Transit

The Chongqing Rail Transit (branded as CRT; also known as Chongqing Metro) is the rapid transit system in the city of Chongqing, China. In operation since 2005, it serves the transportation needs of the city's main business and entertainment downtown areas and inner suburbs. As of December 2018, CRT consisted of eight lines, with a total track length of 311.9 km (193.8 mi). Lines 1, 4, 5, 6, 10 and the Loop line are conventional heavy-rail subways, while Lines 2 and 3 are high-capacity monorails. To keep up with urban growth, construction is under way on Lines 9 and S5, in addition to extensions to Lines 1, 5, 6, 10 and the Loop line. A network of 18 lines is planned.

The Chongqing Rail Transit is a unique transit system in China because of the geography of Chongqing being a densely-populated but mountainous city, with multiple river valleys. Two lines use heavy-monorail technology, leveraging the ability to negotiate steep grades and tight curves and rapid transit capacity. They are capable of transporting 32,000 passengers per hour per direction. At 98 km (61 mi), the system's two monorail lines form the longest monorail system in the world, with the 56.1 km (34.9 mi) Line 3 being the world's longest single monorail line even if the 11.0 km (6.8 mi) Airport branch is excluded. The length and the capacity of its monorail network both also make it the world's busiest monorail system, with a total of 94 million and 250 million rides in 2015 on Line 2 and Line 3, respectively. The latter ridership statistic for Line 3 also makes it the world's busiest single monorail line.

The extreme difference in elevation between the river valleys and the hilly plateaus of Chongqing pose a unique challenge in designing alignments for conventional rail transit lines. The network currently has the world's highest metro-only bridge, the Caijia Rail Transit Bridge for Line 6, spanning the Jialing River valley, with the bridge deck being approximately 100 m above the water. Hongtudi station is the deepest subway station in China and the second-deepest station in the world, after the Kiev Metro's Arsenalna, with Line 10's platforms being more than 94 m below the surface. Liyuchi station, also on Line 10, is the second-deepest station in China, being 76 m below the surface.The Chongqing Rail Transit is also in the process of constructing a number of extremely-long metro-only suspension bridges. The Gaojiahuayuan Rail Transit Bridge carries the western arc of the Loop line over the Jialing River across a 577 m bridge with a main span of 340 m. The 1,650 m (5,410 ft) long Egongyan Rail Transit Bridge will carry the southern arc of the Loop line across the Yangtze River using a 600 m (2,000 ft) long suspension main span, making it the longest metro-only bridge by main span in the world. The Nanjimen Bridge will carry Line 10 trains across a 1,225 m (4,019 ft) cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 480 m (1,570 ft), making it the longest metro-only cable-stayed bridge by main span in the world, surpassing the Vancouver Skybridge in Canada. Finally, the Chongqing Metro has numerous double-deck bridges carrying vehicle and metro traffic, such as the Chaotianmen Bridge, which is the world's longest arch bridge.

Chongqing railway station

The Chongqing railway station(simplified Chinese: 重庆站; traditional Chinese: 重慶站; pinyin: Chóngqìng zhàn) is a railway station of Chengyu Railway, Xiangyu Railway, Chuanqian Railway, Chengyu Passenger Railway, that located in People's Republic of China.

Once the most important railway station in Chongqing, this station handled virtually all long distance services to the rest of China. Located between central city area and the Yangtze River, the extremely steep terrain of Chongqing requires the longest escalator in Asia between the station to the commercial districts and Chongqing Metro Line 1 and Line 3.Currently the station has been closed for major renovations, in line with construction of the Chengdu–Chongqing Intercity Railway. Until 2015, only the ticket hall will remain open. However it is still also the site of a major bus terminal.

Chongqing–Lanzhou railway is a major trunk railway in China connecting Chongqing and Lanzhou. Construction started in 2010, last segment of the railway was opened for service in September 2017. The line allows trains to travel between Chongqing and Lanzhou, Gansu via Nanchong and Guangyuan, Sichuan.

Chongqing–Lichuan railway

The Chongqing–Lichuan railway, or the Yuli railway (simplified Chinese: 渝利铁路; traditional Chinese: 渝利鐵路; pinyin: Yú-Lì Tiělù) is a railway connecting central Chongqing with the Hubei city of Lichuan. The 244-km long railway, connecting Chongqing North railway station with the Lichuan Station on the Yiwan railway, is a section of the Huhanrong Passenger Dedicated Line, which extends to Wuhan, Nanjing, and Shanghai.

Chongqing–Wanzhou intercity railway

Chongqing–Wanzhou intercity railway is a high speed railway between urban Chongqing and its satellite district of Wanzhou.It is also known at the Yu-Wan Railway, which are abbreviations for Chongqing and Wanzhou. Construction started in December 2012, according to the summarizing and commending meeting of the phase II of “100-day Battle” in Chongqing Liangjiang New Area. It was completed on November 29, 2016 and takes passengers from Chongqing North Railway Station to Wanzhou North railway station in one hour. This railway forms a smaller section of two larger railway projects, the Chongqing–Xi'an high-speed railway and the Zhengzhou–Chongqing high-speed railway, extending north and northeast from Wanzhou respectively. It was opened on the 28 November 2016.

Loop line (Chongqing Rail Transit)

Loop Line of CRT is a rapid transit loop line. (also known as Line 0; Chinese: 〇号线 or 零号线) The Northeastern section was opened on December 28, 2018. When the line is fully completed, it will run through two important railway stations, Chongqing North Railway Station, and Chongqing West Railway Station.

North Square of Chongqingbei Railway Station station

Chongqing North Station North Square (simplified Chinese: 重庆北站北广场; traditional Chinese: 重慶北站北廣場; pinyin: Chóngqìng Běizhàn Běiguǎngchǎng) is an interchange station on Line 4 and Line 10 of Chongqing Rail Transit. Located in Chongqing's Yubei District, it serves the nearby Chongqing North railway station.

It opened on December 28, 2017 with the opening of the rest of Line 10. On December 28, 2018, it becomes an interchange station with the opening of Line 4.

Quadruple track

A quadruple-track railway (also known as a four-track railway) is a railway line consisting of four parallel tracks, with two tracks used in each direction. Quadruple-track railways can handle large amounts of traffic, and so are used on very busy routes.

Some tracks are only tripled, having only one extra track to relieve congestion, while some tracks are sextupled, i.e., six parallel tracks with three tracks in each direction.

Shapingba railway station

The Chongqing Shapingba Railway Station is a railway station of Chengyu Passenger Railway that is located in Shapingba District of Chongqing, People's Republic of China. It was originally opened in 1979 serving ground level tracks. It has been operated as part of China Railway's Chengdu Bureau. In 1988, it was renamed as Chongqing North Railway Station, but reverted to the Shapingba name when another new station in Yubei District was opened as Chongqing North railway station. Serving only conventional services, the station was closed in 2011 for a major renovation and as part of an expansion of the Three Gorges Plaza commercial development. It was redeveloped as a fully Integrated Transport Hub, serving high speed and conventional rail, metro rail services, local city buses, taxi services and personal cars, all within a major commercial and retail complex. The railway station section of this project was reopened on the 25th of January, 2018 and the final retail and commercial development is scheduled to be complete by 2020. It should not be confused with the larger Chongqing West railway station, which is also located in Shapingba District, and opened on the same day.

South Square of Chongqingbei Railway Station station

South Square of Chongqingbei Railway Station (simplified Chinese: 重庆北站南广场; traditional Chinese: 重慶北站南廣場; pinyin: Chóngqìng Běizhàn Nánguǎngchǎng) is an interchange station on Line 3, Line 10 and Loop line of Chongqing Rail Transit. Located in Chongqing's Yubei District, it serves the nearby Chongqing North railway station. It opened with the first phase of Line 3 on September 29, 2011 as Chongqingbei Railway Station (simplified Chinese: 重庆北站; traditional Chinese: 重慶北站; pinyin: Chóngqìng Běizhàn). On March 23, 2016, in anticipation of the opening of a second metro station just north of the same railway station, its name was changed to reflect its location serving the south square of the railway station.On December 28, 2017, Line 10 opened for passenger trial operations, however the Line 10 station opened in December 28, 2018, exactly one year later than other stations.The Loop line station also opened in December 28, 2018.

Suining–Chongqing railway

Suining–Chongqing railway is a high-speed railway connecting Chongqing and Suining, Sichuan as part of the Shanghai–Wuhan–Chengdu high-speed railway. It is also known as Suiyu railway, following the Chinese practice of combining the shortened version of the terminal city's name. It is a national grade I railway with two electrified lines, with a designed maximum speed of 200 km (120 mi).

West Triangle Economic Zone

The West Triangle Economic Zone is an economic zone designated by the Chinese government comprising Chengdu, Chongqing and Xi'an. Created as part of China's Western Development strategy, the West Triangle Economic Zone contributes nearly 40% of Western China's GDP. Furthermore, Chongqing is one of China's five National Central Cities, while both Chengdu and Xi'an are Regional Central Cities.The economies of all three cities are highly developed and serve as attractive investment locations within China. Many major international companies have factories or branches in the region, including Microsoft, Ford Motors, Citigroup, and over 200 other Fortune 500 companies.

Overall, the zone has a population of 118 million and covers 220,000 square kilometres. Various major expressways and railways run through the zone, and each of the three cities has a major international airport.
