Bloomberg Radio

Bloomberg Radio provides global business news programming 24 hours a day and is a service of Bloomberg L.P. The format is general and financial news, offering local, national and international news reports along with financial market updates and interviews with corporate executives, economists and industry analysts.[1] On off hours, local stations may preempt with local sports play-by-play coverage such as college basketball, tennis and other sports coverage.

Bloomberg Radio is broadcast on radio stations around the United States, and directly operates four radio stations: WBBR (1130 AM) in New York City, WRCA (1330 AM) in Watertown, Massachusetts (serving the Boston area), KNEW (960 AM) in Oakland, California (serving the San Francisco bay area), and WDCH-FM (99.1 FM) in Bowie, Maryland, serving the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. area. Bloomberg purchased the first of these, WBBR (at the time designated as WNEW), in 1992, for $13.5 million.[2] Bloomberg took over the operation of WXKS (1200 AM) in Newton (serving Boston) on March 1, 2013[3] and KNEW on September 29, 2014.[4] Both stations are owned and operated by iHeartMedia, Inc. (formerly Clear Channel Communications), but are programmed by Bloomberg Radio under a local marketing agreement (LMA).[4] On December 21, 2015, Bloomberg Radio launched a similar arrangement on CBS Radio-owned WNEW-FM, its first FM radio station.[5] The call letters of WNEW-FM were later changed to WDCH-FM. Bloomberg moved its programming in Boston to WRCA, owned by Beasley Media Group, on July 4, 2017,[6] and later that year fully acquired WNBP (1450 AM) in Newburyport to serve as a simulcast of WRCA (both WRCA and WNBP operate translator stations on 106.1 FM);[7] its LMA with WXKS expired on March 1, 2018.[8] Bloomberg Radio is also heard nationally on SiriusXM satellite radio channel 119. Select programming is also broadcast in London, UK on DAB digital radio via the London 3 multiplex (VHF block 11B), with simulcasts of the Bloomberg TV audio at other times.

Programming

The original Bloomberg Radio news format divided each hour of the day into six 10-minutes segments, each of which contained financial market updates, business headlines, traffic, weather, sports, a human interest piece or a general updates about cultural happenings.[9] However, by 2010, Bloomberg Radio had shifted from a headline service to a discussion-based format in order to offer more in-depth market and economic analysis. Bloomberg Radio is the world's only global business radio service. Its programming originates from London, England 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. Eastern Time (6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. London Time). Its programming is co-anchored from New York and Hong Kong Sunday through Thursday 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time (Monday through Friday morning drive time in Asian countries.) In this way, Bloomberg Radio offers a start to the business day globally, via the Bloomberg Radio+ Mobile App and via its live stream on Bloomberg.com and the Bloomberg Terminal. During each day, the Bloomberg Radio broadcasts live interviews with economists, market analysts, and other influential newsmakers on shows such as Bloomberg Surveillance with Tom Keene and Michael McKee which airs weekday mornings from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Eastern Time.[10]

Bloomberg Radio Network

Bloomberg Radio's 24/7 programming is syndicated by United Stations Radio Networks to local radio stations across the country; it is one of three stations (KPIG in Freedom, California and WFAN in New York City being the other two) that are broadcast in this manner.[10]

The Bloomberg Radio Network is also the leading provider of short-form business news reports to radio stations around the country. The network provides live, custom business reports to major all-news radio stations including both of New York City's all-news stations, WCBS and WINS. The network also provides "Bloomberg Market Minute" reports at :20 and :50 past the hour. It also provides daily specialty reports including the Bloomberg Small Business Report, the Bloomberg Business of Sports Report, the Bloomberg Pursuits Report on Luxury, the Bloomberg Real Estate Report, the Bloomberg Green Business Report, and the Bloomberg Urban Report.

750 Burrard Street

750 Burrard Street (also known as 969 Robson Street, or "Robson Central") is a building in Downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, at the northeast corner of Robson Street and Burrard Street.

The site was home of the main branch of the Vancouver Public Library from 1957 to 1995. In December 1996, Canada's first (and ultimately only) Virgin Megastore opened on the lower level; Virgin eventually decided to exit the Canadian market and sold the location to HMV in September 2005. In late 2011, HMV Canada, now separately owned by Hilco UK, announced plans to close the Burrard location in January 2012 as part of a corporate refocusing towards smaller locations. HMV closed at this location on January 23, 2012.

The southeast corner of the building was also the first Planet Hollywood in Vancouver opened on March 16, 1997. The main entrance was on 969 Robson Street. It was closed in October 1999 after bankruptcy. The upper levels were taken over in fall 1997 as studios for the newly launched independent TV station VTV. VTV later became part of the CTV Television Network (now owned by Bell Media), and the site now serves as Bell Media's west coast headquarters. The site selection, and much of the VTV format, had been inspired by Toronto station City and the iconic downtown studios that were at the time synonymous with the station. Incidentally, CTV would later acquire the Toronto building in question (but not City TV).

The Globe and Mail, which was co-owned with CTV from 2001 to 2010, later moved its Vancouver offices into part of CTV's space; its offices remain in the building despite no longer sharing common ownership with CTV. Later, radio stations 94.5 Virgin Radio, 103.5 QMFM, TSN Radio 1040 and TSN Radio 1410 (now BNN Bloomberg Radio 1410), all co-owned with CTV since 2007, also moved into the building. In the early 2010s, CTV reduced its space so that its offices are no longer directly accessible from Burrard Street; though it remains in the same building, it now uses the address 969 Robson Street.

Besides Bell Media and the Globe, current occupants include a flagship Victoria's Secret / Pink store, as well as a Clearly Contacts retail store.

The classical music format that the station is well known for started in September 1953 as KXTR on the FM dial, at 96.5 MHz. As FM became the preferred band for popular music, revenue declined. On August 17, 2000, Entercom moved KXTR to 1250 kHz on the AM band to establish a new pop station, KRBZ, which has since shifted to an alternative rock format. On June 13, 2001, KXTR moved to the new 1660 AM frequency. For a brief period in 2007, the station used the calls WDAF, which formerly belonged to AM sister KCSP.

During the 2009 and 2010 summer months, KXTR played Motor Racing Network coverage of NASCAR Sprint cup night events, which may have been a simulcast from sister station KCSP, which already carried both Motor Racing Network and the Performance Racing Network. (Rival WHB had announced it would air MRN races in 2011.) KXTR is also the home of the Kansas City T-Bones, an independent minor league baseball team in Kansas City, KS.

The call letters were changed to KUDL on March 31, 2011; the call letters were transferred from what is now KMBZ-FM. KRBZ's HD2 channel offered a simulcast of KUDL's programming; as KXTR, this was offered on (the previous) KUDL.The classical format ended at 11 a.m. on March 1, 2012 (4 days earlier than originally announced), in favor of an all-business format, including programming from Bloomberg Radio and Wall Street Journal Radio Network. With the flip, the station adopted the branding "The KMBZ Business Channel," serving as a brand extension of KMBZ (980 AM and 98.1 FM); the two stations also began to share resources. KUDL's music library was then donated to Kansas Public Radio, based in nearby Lawrence. On April 7, 2014, as part of another warehousing move, Entercom swapped the KUDL call letters with sister station KWOD in Sacramento.

On September 8, 2015, KWOD flipped to sports talk, branded as "1660 The Score." KWOD airs Fox Sports Radio during the day and CBS Sports Radio at night, and will serve as a national complement to locally focused sister KCSP.
