Aston Martin Vanquish

The Aston Martin Vanquish is a grand tourer introduced by British luxury automobile manufacturer Aston Martin in 2001 as a successor to the ageing Virage range.

The first-generation of the V12 Vanquish, designed by Ian Callum and unveiled at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show, was produced from 2001 to 2005. The prototype, built by the Ford Motor Company and Indian designer Dilip Chhabria, was driven by James Bond in the 2002 film Die Another Day. In 2004, a more powerful version called the Vanquish S became the marque's flagship, followed by the DBS in 2007.

The second-generation of the Vanquish was introduced in 2012, followed in 2017 by the Vanquish S with a more powerful engine and improved aerodynamics.

The Vanquish was succeeded by the DBS Superleggera in 2018.[2]

V12 Vanquish (2001–2005)

The Aston Martin V12 Vanquish was designed by Ian Callum and drew inspiration from the DB7 Vantage. However, the car had a strong influence from the Project Vantage Concept which debuted with a V12 engine at the North American International Auto Show in January 1998. Underneath, the car featured a strong aluminium/carbon fibre composite chassis with a 5,935 cc (5.9 L; 362.2 cu in) V12 engine. It was available in 2+0 and 2+2 seating configurations and a coupé bodystyle.

The naturally aspirated 60° DOHC 4 valves per cylinder V12 engine with a bore x stroke of 89 mm × 79.5 mm (3.50 in × 3.13 in) has a power output of 466 PS (343 kW; 460 hp) at 6,500 rpm and 400 lb⋅ft (542 N⋅m) of torque at 5,000 rpm.[3] It is controlled by a drive-by-wire throttle and driven by a 6-speed Electrohydraulic manual transmission. The standard Vanquish model had 355 mm (14.0 inches) drilled and ventilated disc brakes with four-pot calipers, ABS, with electronic brake distribution.

Its appearance in the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day[4] earned the V12 Vanquish the number three spot on the list of Best Film Cars Ever,[5] behind the Minis from The Italian Job, and DB5 from Goldfinger and Thunderball. The car also appears in the video games namely Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, James Bond 007: Nightfire, and James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing.

The Vanquish was the basis of two concept cars, both shown at the International Geneva Motor Show in 2004, the Zagato Roadster (a 2-seat, open-top roadster) and the Bertone Jet 2 (a 2-door shooting brake).[6][7]

The Aston Martin Vanquish S debuted at the 2004 Paris Motor Show, with increased engine power output and slight styling revisions. The engine displacement remained at 5,935 cc (5.9 L; 362.2 cu in), but power increased from 466–527 PS (343–388 kW; 460–520 hp). Visual changes included new wheels, a slightly different nose shape, a new raised bootlid with a larger integrated spoiler incorporating the third high level brake light (in the rear window on the original Vanquish), a Vanquish S badge on the bootlid (the original Vanquish had no rear model designation) and the addition of a small front splitter (although this was mainly done for aerodynamic reasons). As part of its improvements, the Vanquish S had a slightly improved drag coefficient of Cd=0.32 (from Cd=0.33 of the Vanquish), with help from a redesigned splitter and boot lid. Its front and rear track measured 1,524 mm (60.0 in) and 1,529 mm (60.2 in), respectively.

The car also incorporated the features of an optional Sports Dynamic Package (available for the Vanquish for the 2004 model year), which incorporated sportier suspension, steering, and brakes. This model was sold for the 2005 (alongside the base Vanquish) and 2006 (as a stand-alone) model years in the United States with only minor changes; it was not sold in the United States for 2007 model year. The Vanquish S has larger brakes than the V12 Vanquish; 378 mm (14.9 in) front discs with six-piston callipers and 330 mm (13.0 in) rear discs with four-piston callipers.

With a top speed exceeding 322 km/h (200 mph), the Vanquish S was (as measured by top speed capability) the fastest Aston Martin automobile ever produced until the One-77 was introduced in 2008.

End of production

The end of the Vanquish's production run was celebrated with the Vanquish S Ultimate Edition. Aston Martin announced that the last 50 cars built would have a new 'Ultimate Black' exterior colour, upgraded interior, and personalised sill plaques.

The production of the Vanquish ended on 19 July 2007, coinciding with the closing of the company's Newport Pagnell factory after 49 years of operation. Production totalled to 2,578 units.

Project AM310 Concept (2012)

The second generation of the Vanquish started life as the Project AM310 Concept that was unveiled at the 2012 Concorso D'Eleganza at Villa D'Este held on the shores of Lake Como, Italy. The concept car was based on the fourth generation of the VH platform. It included a tweaked version of Aston Martin's familiar grille and headlight design and a more pronounced bulge in the bonnet – with One-77-inspired flourishes saved for the sides and the rear, the side vents run almost to the door handles (shared with the One-77), new rear light design shared with the One-77, and a 5.9-litre V12 engine that has a power output of 550 PS (405 kW; 542 hp).[9] Aston Martin later announced that the concept would be put into production as the all new Vanquish.[10][11][12]

Vanquish (2012–2018)

The exterior styling of the Vanquish is an evolution of the DBS with many styling cues such as the elongated side strakes being inspired by the One-77. The boot lid included an integrated rear spoiler designed to look as if it is impossible to make; this was done on the orders of the then Aston Martin Chief Executive, Dr. Ulrich Bez. The car has an exposed carbon fibre side skirt showing its all carbon fibre body. The Vanquish uses the new VH Generation IV platform which is lighter and uses more carbon fibre components than the VH Generation II platform used in the DBS.[13]

The car featured an all new interior based on the one found in the exclusive One-77. The standard interior was upholstered in hand stitched leather and alcantara and was available in a range of colours. The centre console has an revised infotainment system as opposed to the one found in the DBS.[14] The car was available as either a 2-seater or 2+2.[15]

The Vanquish used an upgraded version of Aston Martin's flagship 5.9-litre AM11 V12 engine called the AM28 with a power output of 573 PS (421 kW; 565 hp) at 6,750 rpm and torque of 620 N⋅m (457 lb⋅ft) at 5,500 rpm. The Vanquish can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.1 seconds, and has a top speed of 295 km/h (183 mph). Like most modern Aston Martin automobiles, the engine is front mid-mounted for better weight distribution, with the power going to the rear wheels. The Vanquish has 51/49 front/rear weight distribution, and a kerb weight of 1,739 kg (3,834 lb). It uses a fully catalysed stainless steel exhaust system with active bypass valves. The car uses an updated Touchtronic II six-speed automatic gearbox. It was the first Aston Martin model to be available with launch control.[15] The combined space of cabin and a boot that, at 368 litres, is more than 60% larger than that of the DBS.

The braking system uses ventilated carbon ceramic discs, 398 mm (15.7 in) six-piston callipers in the front and 360 mm (14.2 in) four-piston callipers in the rear. The suspension is a lightweight aluminium front subframe with hollow castings with independent double wishbones incorporating anti-dive geometry, coil springs, anti-roll bar, and monotube adaptive dampers in the front and independent double wishbones with anti-squat and anti-lift geometry, coil springs, anti-roll bar, and monotube adaptive dampers in the rear. It has a three-stage adjustable adaptive damping system including normal, sport and track modes. The tires are Pirelli P Zeros, 255/ZR20 in the front and 305/30 ZR20 in the rear.[16]

The Vanquish was unveiled in the London Film Museum, Covent Garden,[17] followed by the 2012 Monterey Car Week.[18] Deliveries to UK and Continental Europe began in late 2012.[19]

In August 2014, Aston Martin revealed technical modifications to the Vanquish. The changes include a new eight-speed Touchtronic III gearbox and upgraded AM29 V12 engine that has a power output of 576 PS (424 kW; 568 hp) and torque of 465 lb⋅ft (630 N⋅m). The changes greatly enhanced performance, with an acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) being achieved in 3.6 seconds, and a top speed of 324 km/h (201 mph).

Vanquish Volante (2013–2018)

In 2013, Aston Martin unveiled a convertible variant of the Vanquish, called Volante. The Volante has a full carbon fibre body, triple-skin lightweight fabric roof, 50% larger boot than its predecessor and the third generation Brembo 398 mm × 36 mm (front) and 360 mm × 32 mm (rear) Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) brake discs with six-piston front and four-piston rear brake callipers. The Vanquish Volante is 13% torsionally stiffer than the outgoing DBS Volante.

The Volante was unveiled at the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.[20] Deliveries to Europe began in late 2013,[21] with deliveries to the US starting in early 2014.[22]

Vanquish S (2017–2018)

On 16 November 2016, Aston Martin announced the new Vanquish S model. The Vanquish S features the same AM29 V12 engine, with power now increased to 603 PS (444 kW; 595 hp), and a new aerodynamic package. The Vanquish S can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.5 seconds but the top speed remains unchanged at 201 mph (324 km/h). The car's deliveries started in December 2016.[23] Aston Martin also unveiled a convertible version of the Vanquish S called the Vanquish S Volante in 2017.[24]

Vanquish Centenary Edition (2013)

The Centenary Edition is a limited edition of the Vanquish limited to 100 units commemorating 100 years of the Aston Martin company, unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.[25] Changes include unique graduated paint finish, solid sterling silver Aston Martin wing badges with tailored 'trans flux' enamel inlay, a special Aston Martin hallmark, leather interior upholstery from Aston Martin One-77 with contrasting silver stitching, a silver thread embroidery of the Aston Martin wings in the head restraints, solid sterling silver sill plaques individually numbered with an Aston Martin hallmark, a unique presentation box containing a number of exclusive gifts to mark the first 100 years of the company (two glass keys, two bespoke key pouches made from leather matching the car's interior trim, solid silver cufflinks featuring the Aston Martin script, solid silver Rollerball pen, Bang & Olufsen headphones and a silver polishing cloth).[26][27]

Vanquish Volante Neiman Marcus Edition (2013)

The Neiman Marcus edition is a limited edition of the Vanquish limited to 10 cars named after the US department store Neiman Marcus. Based on the US market Vanquish Volante, the bespoke features of the car are designed by the company's bespoke customisation arm; Q by Aston Martin. The design was inspired by the 1969 DB6 Volante owned by HRH Prince of Wales. The car was unveiled at the 2013 Pebble Beach Automotive Week, followed by the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show[28] with delivery scheduled for early 2014.[29]

Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato (2017)

Aston Martin announced a limited series production of the Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato; the latest creation from its long-standing partnership with the prestigious Italian design-house Zagato. The Vanquish Zagato Concept was unveiled to great acclaim at the prestigious Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este at Lake Como, Italy in May 2016. The Vanquish Zagato is available in 4 variants - coupe, convertible, speedster, and shooting brake body styles. The Vanquish Zagato features the same AM29 V12 from the Vanquish S, which has a power output of 603 PS (444 kW; 595 hp) and 630 N⋅m (465 lb⋅ft) of torque, allowing the Vanquish Zagato to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.5 seconds before reaching a top speed of 324 km/h (201 mph).[30]


As part of Aston Martin's 100th anniversary celebration, a Vanquish was airlifted onto the helipad of the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on 17 January 2013.[31][32]

2004 Paris Motor Show

The 2004 Paris Motor Show (Mondial de l'Automobile) took place from 25 September to 10 October 2004, in Paris expo Porte de Versailles. There was an extra exhibition, called L'Automobile et la bande dessinée ("The car and the stripbook") in Palace 8.

Aston Martin VH platform

The VH Platform (for vertical/horizontal platform) is Aston Martin's automobile platform that underpinned their grand tourers and sports cars. It served as the basis for Aston Martin's production cars up until the introduction of the Aston Martin DB11 in 2016, which featured an all-new bonded-aluminium platform that would underpin future Aston Martins. The VH platform was used in all of Aston Martin's lineup at the time excluding the One-77, which uses Carbon Architecture and the Cygnet which is based on the Toyota iQ. There are five variations of the VH platform.

Ian Callum FRSE (born 30 July 1954) is a Scottish car designer who has worked for Ford, TWR, Aston Martin, and in 1999 became the Director of Design for Jaguar Cars. His younger brother Moray Callum is Vice President, Design, Ford Motor Company.

London Motorexpo

Motorexpo first launched in 1996 as a free outdoor alternative to the British International Motor Show and the London Motorfair. Located in Canary Wharf in the London Docklands, it was designed to allow office workers a chance to see new cars without having to take time off to visit a traditional motor show.

The London Motorexpo normally takes place in June, and often features the first public viewing of new cars, though rarely concept cars as in a traditional motor show.

Marek Reichman

Marek Reichman, born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, in 1966, is a British industrial designer currently working as Chief Creative Officer and studio head at Aston Martin.

Markus Storck

Markus Storck is a German bicycle designer and developer, known for creating the lightest racing bike fork in the world, made of carbon fiber, and the first ever carbon fiber bicycle crank. He is the managing director and founder of Storck Bicycle, award-winning designer and innovator, and his current developments hold the world record lightness and stiffness to weight ratios.

Prodrive P2

The Prodrive P2 is a prototype two-seater sports car designed, engineered and built by Prodrive at its Banbury and Warwick sites. The car is based on the platform of the Subaru R1 kei car and has a modified Subaru Impreza WRX STi engine along with many Prodrive systems originally designed for their World Championship and Sports Car Racing programmes. The car's styling was done by Peter Stevens, who also designed the McLaren F1. The car includes rally-inspired anti-lag to prevent turbo lag, as well as an active center and active rear differential that maximizes grip.

A fully working car has been built, and was tested on the TV motoring programme Top Gear — it had 345 bhp (257 kW; 350 PS), obtained a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds, a top speed of 174 miles per hour (280 km/h), and had a Power Lap of 1:24.3, beating such cars as the TVR Sagaris, Audi R8, BMW M5 and Aston Martin Vanquish. It also made Jeremy Clarkson appear to vomit after driving around a circle of cones extremely rapidly to demonstrate its computer-controlled differential system's anti-understeer capabilities.The car's active rear differential automatically shifts torque to whichever of the rear wheels needs it most during manoeuvring, based on spin-slip sensor readings; this is a common rally-car technology rarely seen on road cars. Prodrive has claimed that the car could retail for around £40,000-£50,000, but has said there are no plans to put the car into production at present.

Same Girl (R. Kelly and Usher song)

"Same Girl" is a song released by R&B singer R. Kelly, from his 2007 album Double Up, with R&B singer, Usher. The song was recorded over a year by upcoming R&B group Nephu. R. Kelly and Usher's version leaked to the Internet on May 2, 2007 and later leaked to radio stations. This song was number 26 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007.


Selespeed is the name of an electrohydraulic manual transmission used in Alfa Romeo cars, developed by Italian company Magneti Marelli. The Selespeed is a robotized manual gearbox with electronic clutch. In its current incarnation it can be operated via paddle shifters from the steering wheel or via a "joystick" like a sequential manual gearbox. The right-hand paddle shifter shifts upwards and the left side downwards. The gearbox also has a city-mode which self-shifts in a manner similar to a traditional automatic gearbox.

Selespeed was first introduced in 1999 in the Alfa Romeo 156. At that time it was the first car in its class with such a robotized gearbox. This first version had buttons on the steering wheel for changing gear. With the facelift of the 156 in 2002 these buttons were replaced by paddle shifters (first seen in the Alfa Romeo 147) due to a new steering wheel design.

During normal driving it is possible to use either the paddles or the joystick but if the driver tries to use paddles during joystick mode the joystick has higher priority. The speed of the gear change depends on the engine revs, if the engine has more than 5000 rpm and the throttle is pressed more than 60% the change is faster. The system also has a rev limiter to avoid over revving, (in GTA models this behaviour is removed). Downshift are accompanied with automatic rev-matching. This gearbox is made for sportive driving but the city-mode allows using it like an automatic gearbox in city driving.

Top Gear (series 19)

The nineteenth series of Top Gear was aired during 2013 on BBC Two and BBC HD, beginning on 27 January and concluding on 24 February. It was subsequently followed by a two part special entitled "Africa Special", the first part airing on 3 March 2013, and the second airing a week later on 10 March.

The fifth series of Top Gear aired during 2004 and consisted of 9 episodes, beginning on 24 October and concluding on 26 December. The series was subsequently followed by a "Best Of Top Gear" special, which aired on 2 January 2005, and charted the best moments from Series 4 and 5.

World Car of the Year

The World Car Awards (WCOTY) is an automobile award selected by a jury of 82 international automotive journalists from 24 countries. Cars considered must be sold in at least five countries, on at least two continents prior to 1 January of the year of the award. The contest was inaugurated in 2003, and officially launched in January 2004.

This was as a unified award, similar to many of the continent, and nation-specific Car of the Year awards already given. Since 2006, awards for performance, green cars, and car design have also been given. In 2013, an award for luxury design was inaugurated.

ZF 8HP transmission

The ZF 8HP is an eight-speed automatic transmission designed and built by ZF Friedrichshafen. It had its debut in the BMW 7 Series (F01) 760Li saloon fitted with the V12 engine, and since then each new BMW model in all Series down to the 1 Series in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions have been equipped with it.

One of its main aims is to improve vehicle fuel economy, and it can achieve an 11% saving compared to the ZF 6-speed transmission and 14% versus modern 5-speed transmissions. Due to changes in internal design, the shift times have reduced to 200 milliseconds; additionally, the unit brings the ability to shift in a non-sequential manner - going from gear 8 to gear 2 in extreme situations. In the 8HP70 version, it has a torque handling limit of 700 newton metres (516 lbf⋅ft), and weighs 87 kilograms (192 lb).Future development will see two four-wheel drive versions available, with a version destined for Volkswagen Group applications using a Torsen centre differential. It will be able to encompass a torque range from 300 newton metres (221 lbf⋅ft) to 1,000 newton metres (738 lbf⋅ft), and will be available for use in middle-class cars through to large luxury sport utility vehicles.Chrysler Group LLC initially received the 8HP 8-speed automatic transmissions from the ZF plant in Saarbrucken, Germany. By 2013, in parallel with Chrysler Group, ZF had set up a new transmission production plant in Gray Court, South Carolina. ZF Friedrichshafen and Chrysler Group have reached a supply and license agreement for the 8HP. Chrysler Group is licensed to produce the 8HP at the company’s Kokomo Transmission Plant and the Kokomo Casting plant, production began in 2013.This transmission is marketed by Chrysler under their own brand name, the Torqueflite 8.2nd generation 8HP products were released starting in 2014. Efficiency improvements over the original design include a wider ratio spread of 7.8:1, reduced drag torque from the shift elements, reduction in required oil pump pressure, and broadened use of the coasting and start-stop systems. ZF estimated fuel economy improvement over 1st generation 8HP kits to be 3%. Refinements were also made with respect to vibration.

3rd generation 8HP products were released starting in 2018. Major improvments are total spread of 8.6 and a fuel economy improvement of 2.5% compared to the 2nd generation. There are several options in maximum torque available, also the gearbox is available with mild hybrid and plug in hybrid options: With 15 kW and 200 NM supporting boosting and repueration in combination with 48 Volt technology up to 90 kw and 250 NM for usage with higher voltage.
