Arri Alexa

The Arri Alexa (stylised as ΛLEXΛ) is a digital motion picture camera system made by Arri first introduced in April 2010. The camera was Arri's first major transition into digital cinematography after smaller previous efforts such as the Arriflex D-20 and D-21.

Alexa cameras are designed for use in high budget feature films, television shows, and commercials, and compete with Red Digital Cinema's line of high end cameras such as the Epic Dragon and Weapon Dragon. Alexa uses the ALEV series of image sensors manufactured by ON Semiconductor.[1]

The camera has several methods of recording, including SxS cards, CFast 2.0 cards and SXR Capture Drives at resolutions up to 2880 x 2160 pixels in either Rec. 709 or Log-C to ProRes or ARRIRAW codecs. Alexa camera owners can purchase additional software licenses that will unlock different capabilities of the Alexa Camera including High Speed 120fps recording, DNxHD codec and 4:3 "Open Gate" Mode for anamorphic lenses.

It features modularity, PL mount lenses, a Super 35 sized CMOS sensor shooting up to 2880×2160 resolution and supports uncompressed video or proprietary raw (ARRIRAW) data.[2]

The price of the camera depends on model and accessories; as an example, in 2015 an Arri Alexa XT cost approximately $66,000-100,000, depending on accessories included.[3]

The range of Alexa models has expanded over time:


The first camera of the Alexa product family. The ARRI ALEXA’s CMOS Super-35mm sensor is rated at 2.8K and ISO 800. That sensitivity allows the camera to see a full seven stops of over exposure and another seven stops of underexposure. To take advantage of this, ARRI offers both industry-standard REC709 HD video output as well as the Log-C mode that shows the entire range of the chip’s sensitivity, allowing for an extreme range of color correction options in post.

Alexa Plus

The ALEXA Plus added integrated wireless remote control, the ARRI Lens Data System (LDS), additional outputs, lens synchronization for 3D, and built-in position and motion sensors.

Alexa Plus 4:3

The ALEXA Plus added integrated wireless remote control, the ARRI Lens Data System (LDS), additional outputs, lens synchronization for 3D, and built-in position and motion sensors and a 4:3 sensor making it ideal for anamorphic cinematography.

Alexa M

The Alexa M had its imaging and processing unit broken down in two parts to be small, compact and lightweight for 3D rigs and other uses where size is a concern.

Alexa Studio

The Alexa Studio features an optical viewfinder, mechanical shutter, and a 4:3 sensor for anamorphic cinematography.

Alexa XT

In February 2013,[4] the range was renewed as Alexa XT (XT standing for extended technology). This range is upgraded versions of the original Alexa cameras, which are equipped with a so-called XR module, which replaces the SxS module on the cameras, and allows direct raw recording without the need for an external recorder. This module records on dedicated SSD drives. Further improvements are an internal ND filter unit, a 4:3 sensor and a quieter cooling fan. The range accordingly comprises the Alexa, the Alexa XT, the Alexa XT M, the Alexa XT Plus, the Alexa XT Studio, and the Alexa Fiber Remote. Existing cameras can be upgraded with the XR module for internal raw recording.[5]

Alexa 65

On 21 September 2014 at the Cinec convention in Munich, Arri announced the Alexa 65,[6] a 6k 65mm digital cinema camera. As with cameras from competitor Panavision, the Alexa 65 camera was available by rental only, provided through the ARRI Rental Group.[7] The Alexa 65 uses the A3X sensor, which has a maximum recordable resolution of 6560x3100.[8][9]

The first production to use the camera was Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, which was used to shoot the underwater sequence, and around forty percent of The Revenant.[10][11]

In May 2015, Marvel Studios announced that Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame will be shot entirely with the brand new camera, marking the first time a narrative feature film was shot entirely with a customized version of Alexa 65 camera, Alexa IMAX.[12]

Alexa Mini

On 24 February 2015, Arri announced the Alexa Mini. It has the same sensor as the other Alexa cameras. It features in-camera recording to CFast 2.0 cards, 200 FPS and 4K UHD in-camera upscaling.

Alexa SXT

On 18 March 2015, Arri announced the SXT line of Arri Alexa cameras which will support in-camera upscaling of Apple ProRes to 4K resolution and Rec. 2020 color space.[13][14] Arri also announced the SXR module which can upgrade XT, XT Plus, and XT Studio cameras with the SXT features.[13][14]

Alexa LF

On 2 February 2018, Arri announced the Alexa LF at the BSC Expo. It's a true 4K Large Format Camera. The ALEXA LF’s A2X sensor is based on two vertical ALEV-III sensors, which are stitched together to create a seamless large format image. This is the same principle of how they created the ALEXA 65, which uses three Alexa sensors that are arranged vertically. The ALEXA LF can record in Open Gate in a resolution of 4448 x 3096.

The Alexa's ALEV III image sensor has 3392×2200 effective pixels used for generating an image, 2880×2160 pixels are generally used for recording on the Alexa Studio and M in 4:3 mode, and 2880×1620 pixels are used for recording on the regular Alexa and other models in 16:9 mode, the rest of the sensor is used for lookaround in the viewfinder. Alternately the full sensor resolution may be employed in 'Open Gate' mode for resolution demanding situations.

The Alexa 65 uses the A3X sensor, which has a 54.12 mm x 25.59 mm active imaging area. It provides up to 6560x3102 'Open Gate' maximum recordable resolution.[9]

Recording media

The Arri Alexa can record to 1920×1080 ProRes 422 or ProRes 4444 on SxS Cards or 2880×1620 ARRIRAW to external recording devices. The Arri Alexa Firmware 7 increases the resolution on the SxS cards to 2k ProRes 4444 (previously 1080p)


ArriRaw is a raw codec similar to CinemaDNG that contains unaltered Bayer sensor information, the data stream from the camera can be recorded via T-link with certified recorders like those from Codex Digital or Cineflow.

The ArriRaw format (along with the other recordable formats) contains static and dynamic metadata. These are stored in the header of the file and can be extracted with the free web tool metavisor[15] or with the application Meta Extract provided by Arri. Of particular importance for visual effects are the lens metadata, which are stored only when Arri's lens data system (LDS) is supported by the lens used.


According to cinematographer Roger Deakins, the Alexa's tonal range, color space and latitude exceed the capabilities of film. "This camera has brought us to a point where digital is simply better", says Deakins.[16] Deakins used the camera to shoot the James Bond film Skyfall, Unbroken, Sicario, Prisoners and the Academy Award for Best Cinematography winner Blade Runner 2049.

Due to the camera's simplicity of use and high image quality, several network television shows have been shot with the Alexa.[17]

Since its introduction, five movies shot on Alexa (Argo, Birdman, Spotlight, Moonlight, and The Shape of Water) won an Academy Award for Best Picture. Also, movies shot on Alexa won Academy Award for Best Cinematography six times, including five in a row between 2011 and 2015, for Hugo, Life of Pi, Gravity, Birdman, The Revenant, and Blade Runner 2049.

The Arri Group is a global supplier of motion picture film equipment. Based in Munich, the company was founded in 1917. It produces professional motion picture cameras, lenses, lighting and postproduction equipment. Hermann Simon mentioned this company in his book Hidden Champions of the 21st Century as an example of a Hidden Champion. The Arri Alexa camera system was used to film Academy Award winners for Best Cinematography including Hugo, Life of Pi, Gravity, Birdman and The Revenant.

Arri PL

Arri PL is a lens mount developed by Arri for use with both 16 mm and 35 mm movie cameras. The PL stands for "positive lock". It is the successor mount to the Arri bayonet; however, unlike the bayonet mount, it is incompatible with older Arri-mount lenses, due to the larger diameter. (This can be rectified with an adapter relatively easily, as the flange focal distance is identical.)

Arriflex D-21

The Arriflex D-21 is a film-style digital motion picture camera introduced by Arri in 2008 to replace their earlier generation Arriflex D-20.

Arriscope (surgical microscope)

Arriscope is a fully digital operating microscope delivering high-definition output streams in 3D and is developed and manufactured by Arri. The Arriscope has been presented to the public in a prototype version in May 2013 on the 84th Annual Meeting of the German Society

Avid DNxHD

Avid DNxHD ("Digital Nonlinear Extensible High Definition") is a lossy high-definition video post-production codec developed by Avid for multi-generation compositing with reduced storage and bandwidth requirements. It is an implementation of SMPTE VC-3 standard.

Chronicle (film)

Chronicle is a 2012 American found footage superhero science-fiction thriller film directed by Josh Trank and written by Max Landis based on a story by both. It follows three Seattle high school seniors, bullied Andrew (Dane DeHaan); his cousin Matt (Alex Russell); and more popular Steve (Michael B. Jordan) — who form a bond after gaining telekinetic powers from an unknown crystalline object found underground.

Chronicle premiered at the Gérardmer Film Festival on January 28, 2012. It was released in the United Kingdom and Ireland on February 1, 2012, and in the United States on February 3, 2012.

Epic Split

"Epic Split" is a 75-second-long commercial released in late-2013 by Volvo Trucks. It features Jean-Claude Van Damme performing gymnastic splits between two moving trucks set to the music "Only Time" by Enya.The director was Andreas Nilsson. It was the sixth advert released in the series called Live Test which Swedish advertising agency Forsman & Bodenfors had created for Volvo Trucks.

The runway of the closed Ciudad Real Central Airport in Spain was selected as the shooting location during the five-month planning period.Following three days of rehearsals, the stunt footage featuring van Damme was recorded in a single take.

Van Damme was protected by a hidden safety harness and wire not visible in the final result. A small platform was fitted to each truck behind the wing mirrors to support Van Damme's feet during the stunt.

Mikael Rosell was the driver of the truck steering sideways. Both trucks were driving in reverse at a fixed speed of 25 kilometres per hour (16 mph), with co-drivers in each of the two trucks to help monitor the speed.Filming was performed with an Arri Alexa digital camera mounted via a boom to a camera car. The long shot was done in a single take, because of the position of the sunrise. Some colour grading and removal of reflections and safety wires was done by The Mill during post-production.One week after release, Epic Split had been viewed online 25 million times, and after nine days reached 40 million views.Enya's music "Only Time" re-entered the Billboard Top 100 reaching number 43, thirteen years after the original release. An initial international follow-up market research survey by GfK found Epic Split to be the most attention grabbing of the six adverts in the Live Test series, but less effective than the other five in causing immediate action of the viewer.Neuroscientific analysis showed that female viewers were more intrigued and engaged during the split itself; whereas male viewers sympathised with the pain possibly being felt by Van Damme, subsequently leading to high memory encoding effectiveness at the precise point of the "Volvo Dynamic Steering" message being shown.

By late-2014 the overall campaign was estimated to have cost $3–4 million to produce, and generated $170 million in revenue for Volvo.


IMAX is a system of high-resolution cameras, film formats and film projectors. Graeme Ferguson, Roman Kroitor, Robert Kerr, and William C. Shaw developed the first IMAX cinema projection standards in the late 1960s and early 1970s in Canada. Unlike conventional projectors, the film runs horizontally (see diagram sprocket holes) so that the image width is greater than the width of the film. Since 2002, some feature films have been converted into IMAX format for displaying in IMAX theatres, and some have also been (partially) shot in IMAX. IMAX is the most widely used system for special-venue film presentations. By late 2017, 1,302 IMAX theatre systems were installed in 1,203 commercial multiplexes, 13 commercial destinations, and 86 institutional settings in 75 countries.


Jalaibee (Urdu: جلیبی‬‎; meaning twist) is a 2015 Pakistani caper action thriller film directed and written by Yasir Jaswal, produced by Eman Syed. Jalaibee is a joint production of ARY Films & Redrum Films in association with Sermad Films and Jaswal Films. The film stars prominent TV actors Danish Taimoor and Ali Safina in lead roles along with Adnan Jaffar, Sajid Hasan, Uzair Jaswal, Wiqar Ali Khan, Sabeeka Imam and Zhalay Sarhadi.It is the first Pakistani film to be shot with Arri Alexa camera. The film is shot in capital cities Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Jalaibee features Ford Mustang 73 in the film as well as its mascot. It is about the intertwined stories of numerous relatable characters who are all struggling with their problems, and who somehow connect on a unifying level.

List of films released in IMAX

Following is a list of films released in IMAX which use IMAX, a motion-picture film format and projection standard. IMAX cameras and film stock are rarely used for mainstream films; the cameras are heavy and the film stock is expensive. However, since 2002, some feature films shot with digital cameras or on regular 35mm film stock have undergone IMAX Digital Media Remastering (DMR) processing for showing both in 70mm IMAX theatres and in Digital IMAX theatres.

Several animated titles (Fantasia 2000, Beauty and the Beast, Treasure Planet, The Lion King, Falling in Love Again, CyberWorld, Fly Me to the Moon 3D and Santa vs. the Snowman 3D) were released in 70mm IMAX prints; however, they were not subject to DMR processing.Some titles such as Skyfall and Blade Runner 2049 have been displayed on IMAX screens but were not subject to DMR processing.

Nocebo (film)

Nocebo is a short German thriller film. The film's run time is 38 minutes. It was written by German scriptwriter Maggie Peren, directed by Lennart Ruff and produced by Südart Filmproduktion in association with Menelaos Film. The film was shot using an Arri Alexa by cinematographer Marcello Kahl. The film is Lennart Ruffs, Severin Höhnes and Tobias M. Hubers final project at the University of Television and Film Munich, as well as Marcello Kahl's final project at the Filmacademy Ludwigsburg.
