Background

The program started in October 1980 on radio station DWWA 1206 kHz then in 1983 on television as a 30-minute block timer on IBC with a shoe-string budget.. Initially, the TV program would only run for one hour due to limited funds. The program currently airs live via satellite through the facilities of UHF Channel UNTV and various radio stations such as DZRH, UNTV-Radio La Verdad 1350, and 100 Radyo Natin FM Stations. While mainly broadcasting in Filipino, some English language elements were added for foreign viewers, including "Truth in Focus", "Biblically Speaking", "How Authentic the Bible is", and "Bible Guide". It also features the use of multi-lingual and multi-dialectic translations of the Bible.

The Members of the Church of God International denies several doctrines such as the Trinity[2] and salvation by grace alone. The program frequently criticizes other denominations for their doctrines, practices and what it says are false teachings, including the Catholic Church, some Christian denominations, Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh-day Adventist Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and especially the Iglesia ni Cristo, (Church of Christ founded by Felix Manalo), a Philippine-based religion.

Gawad Amerika Awards in November 2006 awarded "Most Informative Religious Program of the Year" to Ang Dating Daan for its North American broadcast.[3][4]

On its 35th anniversary, Ang Dating Daan held a special anniversary presentation last October 12, 2015 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum featuring the ADD Chorale. In line with the theme "Truth. Charity. Praise.", the ADD Chorale serenaded special guests mainly persons with disabilities (PWDs) with the best songs of praises and thanksgiving to the Almighty God for all the success of ADD. It was aired LIVE via satellite and over the internet exclusively in over 1,360 monitoring centers of ADD worldwide. It also marked the official attempt of MCGI to break the Guinness world record for the "Largest Gospel Choir in a Single Location." Under the supervision of Guinness official adjudicator and independent auditing firm Punongbayan & Araullo Grant Thorton, the Guinness world record was awarded to MCGI with a total of 8,688 choristers from the ADD Chorale beating the previous record held by the Philippine religious group Iglesia Ni Cristo with 4,745 participants during their 100th centennial anniversary at the Philippine Arena.

Currently, Ang Dating Daan airs in 73 countries worldwide including the United States, Latin America, Uruguay, Brazil, Portugal (as "O Caminho Antigo"), Spain (as "El Camino Antiguo"), India, Japan, South Africa, Saipan.[5][6]

Suspension of broadcasting rights

On August 16, 2004, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) preventively suspended the showing of the Ang Dating Daan program for 20 days due to slander and use of offensive and obscene language by its televangelist host Eliseo Soriano, as a mean of disciplinary action.[7]

On September 27, 2004, the MTRCB extended the suspension to three months. Soriano challenged the action in court, arguing that the suspension imposed by the MTRCB constituted prior restraint on the media and that his language during the show's August 10, 2004 broadcast was not obscene and offensive. The court dismissed his case in favor of MTRCB.[8]

On June 2005, Soriano filed a motion by recommendation of the Commission on Human Rights, saying the MTRCB violated the "right to information, communication and religion" of every Filipino.[9] On April 29, 2009, The Supreme Court upheld the suspension imposed by the MTRCB, ruling that Soriano’s statements can be treated as obscene and cannot be considered as protected speech.[10]

Soriano filed a motion seeking the reversal of its April 2009 decision. The Supreme Court denied Soriano's motion and affirmed the decision with finality in 2010 by an 11-4 vote, noting that "it is a sanction that the MTRCB may validly impose under its charter without running afoul of the free speech clause." The high court reminded Soriano that his program, being aired on television, is accessible to children of all ages and therefore not appropriate for a program with a "G" or for general audience rating due to his use of vulgar language and invectives.[7][11]

ADD Convention Center

The Ang Dating Daan (ADD) Convention Center also known as Pasalamatán in Tagalog is an open-type, multi-purpose convention center owned by the Members Church of God International (MCGI), a Philippine-based Christian religious organization. It is located inside the 58-hectare ADD Central Headquarters (also known as ADD Compound) along MacArthur Highway in Brgy. Sampaloc, Apalit, Pampanga, Philippines. MCGI is also known in the Philippines as Ang Dating Daan or "ADD" (English: "The Old Path"), the title of its flagship radio and television program.

Ang Tamang Daan

Ang Tamang Daan (lit. The Right Path) is a program produced by the Philippine-based religious organization, Iglesia ni Cristo, and aired over their television station, Net 25. Originally, the Iglesia ni Cristo debates and rebukes claims made by fellow Philippine religious organization Ang Dating Daan or MCGI and their presiding minister, Eliseo Soriano, about the beliefs of the Iglesia ni Cristo, primarily regarding the deity of Jesus Christ.

Currently, it became a question and answer program about the doctrines of the INC through by e-mail messages by non-members.

The name of the program is probably meant to be a pun of the name of Ang Dating Daan, which is Tagalog for "The Old Path", with the INC claiming their program, Ang Tamang Daan is "The Right Path".

Relations between the two groups have been perennially strained, and both organizations use their respective television programs as well as other media to present "evidence" which they believe shows contradictions in each other's teachings.

Broadcast ministry of Members Church of God International

Broadcast media is being utilized by the Members Church of God International (MCGI), an international Christian religious organization with headquarters in the Philippines, to preach the gospel and expand internationally. The church is producing religious programs in different languages, aired in various countries, by acquiring time slots in several television stations. The church also maintains its own radio and television network for its 24/7 terrestrial, satellite and internet broadcasts.

The MCGI started as a small group with less than a hundred believers in 1977. It is popularly known in the Philippines as Ang Dating Daan (ADD) (English: The Old Path), the title of its flagship radio and television program and currently the longest-running religious program in the Philippines with Eliseo Soriano (also known as "Bro. Eli") as the program's main host and the "Overall Servant" (Former title: "Presiding Minister") to MCGI. Most of its broadcast ministries are directly funded by the church, through voluntary contributions from its members, as the church do not accept monetary donations from non-members. Meanwhile, a few of its news and public affairs programs in the Philippines are supported by commercial advertisements.

Its global evangelism is conducted mostly via AM radio, FM radio, terrestrial television, cable television and direct-to-home satellite transmissions. Other platforms include internet streaming, mobile applications and various forms of social media. The group also conducts regular Bible Expositions aired live via satellite in all MCGI local congregations and through the "MCGI Broadcast" mobile app.

Conflicts between Iglesia ni Cristo and Members Church of God International

Since 1980, there have been conflicts between Philippine-based Christian religious organizations Iglesia ni Cristo ("Church of Christ", INC) and the Members Church of God International (MCGI), when MCGI Overall Servant Eliseo Soriano started his radio program Ang Dating Daan (ADD). Through his program, he discussed biblical issues and "exposed" what he believes to be wrong doctrines of other religious groups, including those of INC. In 2001, after 20 years of reticence, the INC launched its own program, Ang Tamang Daan, as a direct response for the first time to Ang Dating Daan, featuring video footages and recordings of ADD hosts as issues were tackled. Over time, the animosity between the two groups has intensified and the relationship has been severely strained.

He is the main host of radio and television program Ang Dating Daan (English: The Old Path, Portuguese: O Caminho Antigo, Spanish: El Camino Antiguo), considered as the longest-running religious program in the Philippines.

Soriano is known for his signature method of "Bible Expositions". It is a live Bible symposium where guests get the chance to ask impromptu questions personally or via live video streaming or telephone calls. He is also known for straightforward preaching and "exposing" what he believes are doctrinal errors of various local and international religious groups. He also had numerous religious debates with different pastors.

An incident when he used a defamatory word in his television show consequently led to a three-month suspension of the program in a case that went to the Supreme Court of the Philippines.

Itanong mo kay Soriano

Itanong mo kay Soriano (Tagalog for "Ask Soriano, the Bible Will Answer") is a religious radio and television program in the Philippines produced by the Members Church of God International and hosted by Eli Soriano. Unlike its sister program, Ang Dating Daan, the program features a question and answer format in which any visitor in the show can ask Soriano about biblical teachings. In the Philippines, the broadcast of this program takes place right after Ang Dating Daan and it became a separate show in 1993. In the other countries, however, this show is part of the TV program O Caminho Antigo which is also hosted by Soriano. He regularly conducts "Bible Expositions" in specific venues (stadiums, public places, etc.) where the people can ask him personally on biblical issues, the Exposition is then recorded and broadcast as this show.

Members Church of God International

Members Church of God International, abbreviated as MCGI, is an international Christian religious organization with headquarters in the Philippines. It started as a small group with less than a hundred believers in 1977. It is popularly known in the Philippines as Ang Dating Daan (English: The Old Path; abbreviated as ADD), the title of its flagship radio and television program and currently the longest-running religious program in the Philippines with Brother Eliseo Soriano as its "Overall Servant" (Former title: "Presiding Minister").

Members Church of God International believes that the Almighty God, the Father sent his begotten Son, Jesus Christ, instrumental in the establishment of the "Church of God", first planted in Jerusalem and preached by the apostles. They believe that Gentile nations, including the Philippines, are partakers of the promise of eternal life, through belief in Jesus Christ and the gospel and are not authorized by God to establish their own church, but mere members associated with the same "body" or the church written in the gospel by accepting it and executing the doctrines written by the apostles. Guided by this scriptural principle, the church's registered name contains descriptive words "ang mga kaanib" in Tagalog or "members" in English to emphasize the group's association today, as "members" of the "Church of God" that is already established long time ago and was written in the Bible.

On April 25, 1980, in compliance with government regulations, Eliseo Soriano registered the group with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as Ang Mga Kaanib sa Iglesia ng Dios Kay Kristo Hesus, Haligi at Saligan ng Katotohan, sa Bansang Pilipinas (English: Members of the Church of God in Christ Jesus, Pillar and Ground of Truth in the Philippines). In 2004, its registered name was changed to "Members Church of God International" (Tagalog: Mga Kaanib sa Iglesia ng Dios na Pandaigdig) in line with the church's overseas expansion.

For them, the church's primary objective, as commanded by Jesus Christ, is to propagate the gospel unto all nations until the consummation of the ages, convert sinners to believe and glorify God and to make them qualify for the eternal life in heaven. Currently, MCGI is present in six inhabited continents of the world with more than 1,360 established local congregations. Its flagship program Ang Dating Daan is being broadcast in more than 70 countries, in five languages over terrestrial television, radio, internet and carried by at least seven satellites across the globe. They believe in God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit but they adopt a nontrinitarianism orientation, rejecting the Trinitarian concept that there is "one God in three co-equal persons", which for them is against the Bible. They believe that the Father is greater than all, greater than Jesus Christ as declared by Christ himself. They do not observe customs and traditions which they consider to have pagan origins incompatible with Christianity. MCGI members prefer themselves to be called and identified as plain "Christians".

MCGI is not related to the many Church of God groups that descended from the Barney Creek Meeting House revival of the late 19th century in the United States.
