History

Aselsan was founded by the Turkish Army Foundation in 1975[3]

The first CEO of ASELSAN was M. Hacim Kamoy.[3]

In early 1979 following an investment (for example: Card payment systems)[4] and infrastructure establishment period, ASELSAN started its production, at Macunköy facilities in Ankara.[3] Since then, ASELSAN has expanded its product and customer portfolio, mostly based on indigenous research and development, locally trained personnel, and in cooperation with other Turkish research institutions and universities.

Organization

ASELSAN designs, develops and manufactures modern electronic systems for military and industrial customers, in Turkey and abroad. The company headquarters is situated at Macunköy facilities in Ankara, Turkey. According to the field of activities, ASELSAN has been organized in five business sectors:[5]

  • Communication and Information Technologies Business Sector (HBT),
  • Microelectronics, Guidance and Electro-Optics Business Sector (MGEO),
  • Radar and Electronic Warfare Systems Business Sector (REHIS),
  • Defense Systems Technologies Business Sector (SST),

The Communication and Information Technologies Business Sector (HBT), Radar and Electronic Warfare Systems Business Sector (REHIS), Defense Systems Technologies Business Sector (SST) and Transportation, Security, Energy and Automation Systems Business Sector (UGES) have high-technology and automated infrastructure in engineering and production at Macunköy facilities. Electronic production includes surface mount technology, multilayer and flexible printed circuit boards, mechanical and mould productions, system integration and test fields. While Communication and Information Technologies Business Sector's main product spectrum covers military and professional communications systems, Radar and Electronic Warfare Systems Business Sector's main operations are focused on radar, electronic warfare and Defense Systems Technologies Business Sector's main operations are focused on command-control systems. Microelectronics, Guidance and Electro-Optics Business Sector manufactures hybrid microelectronic circuits, night vision devices, thermal cameras, laser ranger/designators and inertial navigation systems at Akyurt facilities.

In all business sectors, methodologies complying with military standards and ISO-9001 are applied using computer aided design (CAD), computer aided engineering (CAE) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) technologies.

ASELSAN is a member of TÜMAKÜDER[6] and IPC. [7]

Facilities

Radar and Electronic Warfare Technology Center

ASELSAN opened its new facility (Turkish: ASELSAN Radar ve Elektronik Harp Teknoloji Merkezi) in Gölbaşı district of Ankara on 16 March 2015.[8] Built in three years to a cost of US$157 million, the site serves for the production of radar and electronic warfare equipment required by the Turkish Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force), space and unmanned platforms. The facility covers an area of 75,000 m2 (810,000 sq ft) on a land of 35 ha (86 acres). A total of 776 engineers, 261 technical personnel and more than 200 support personnel are employed in the center.[9]

The technology center serves for the design, research and development, production, test and logistic support of mainly long-range tracking air defense radars and fighter aircraft radars but also of diverse radars and electronic warfare systems as well as antennas, microwave power modules and software.[9]

Suicides and unexpected deaths

Between 2006 and 2009, four suspicious deaths occurred, of young engineers who were working at Aselsan on highly strategic encryption and decryption projects. The cases were initially declared as suicides. Three of the four cases were relaunched in 2011 to investigate a possible link to the Gülen Movement.[10]

On 7 August 2006, Hüseyin Başbilen, a 31-year-old mechanical engineer working for ten years at Aselsan as a production engineer, was found dead in his car at Pursaklar, Ankara.[11][12] His left wrist and throat were cut, his head was under the glove compartment on the passenger's side and his feet were up on the driver's seat.[13] In 2009, a court ruled that it was suicide. In 2011, the case was reopened as part of the "Ergenekon" investigation.

On 16 January 2007, 30-year-old Halim Ünsem Ünal was found dead, shot by a handgun, in his car at Gölbaşı, Ankara. The METU-graduate electrical engineer was working for three years for ASELSAN.[13]

On 26 January 2007, another electrical engineer, Evrim Yançeken, age 26, fell from the balcony of his sixth-floor apartment at Batıkent, Ankara. In a note he left behind, he claimed the responsibility for his death.[13]

The cases were closed as suicides with little or no investigation.[14][15]

On 7 October 2007, Burhaneddin Volkan was dead from a gunshot wound in the sentry officer's room of the Military Band School, where he had been working. Following graduation Hacettepe University in 2005, he worked for two years at Aselsan's aviation command and control center as a software engineer. After his three colleagues committed suicide, he had experienced psychological problems and returned to his family.[13]

On 25 January 2012, Hakan Öksüz died in a car accident, crashing into the traffic barrier at a major junction on the south beltway of Ankara. He was employed as an engineer at Aselsan's facility in Akyurt, Ankara.[13]

On 15 January 2015, 28-year-old Erdem Uğur was found dead poisoned by LPG in his home at Çankaya, Ankara. Lying in bed, a hose was leading inside his mouth from a gas cylinder he had ordered two days before. A note with "Caution! Gas" was attached to the entrance of the apartment. He was a graduate of Dokuz Eylül University in İzmir and was working as a magnetic field expert for Aselsan since 14 February 2014.[16][17]

International expansion

ASELSAN has associated companies in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates. Besides, the company announced in October 2015 that they are planning to expand their South African business "by seeking partnerships to form a private company out of its local branch ASELSAN South Africa"[18]

ACAR Ground Surveillance Radar

ACAR is a surveillance radar, designed and manufactured by ASELSAN A.Ş, a Turkish corporation that produces electronic systems for the Turkish Armed Forces.Its main role is ground surveillance and artillery fire adjustment.

Akyurt

Akyurt, formerly Ravlı, is a district of Ankara Province of Turkey. According to 2010 census, population of the district is 26,006 of which 25,353 live in the urban center of Akyurt. The district covers an area of 212 km2 (82 sq mi), and the average elevation is 960 m (3,150 ft).

Akyurt is an industrial area about 30 km from the city centre, near Ankara Esenboğa International Airport, on the road from Ankara to Çankırı. Factories in the district include Mikes, and a plant of the electronics company Aselsan. There are over 18,000 residents, including many recent migrants from Çankırı, Çorum and Kastamonu, but the daytime working population of Akyurt is over 40,000.

Altay (tank)

The Altay is a modern main battle tank developed by Otokar, a subsidiary of Koç Holding, with technological input from Hyundai Rotem of South Korea for the Turkish Army and export markets. It is named in honor of Army General Fahrettin Altay who commanded the 5th Cavalry Corps in the final stage of the Turkish War of Independence.

Bayraktar-class landing ship tank

The Bayraktar class are a class of landing ship tanks (LSTs) built in Turkey. The two amphibious vessels of the class were built for the Turkish Navy by Anadolu Shipyard (Anadolu Deniz Insaat Kizaklari Sanayi ve Ticaret- ADIK). The LSTs will satisfy the current and future operational requirements of the Turkish Naval Forces Command.

The LSTs are primarily intended for amphibious missions and transportation of troops and equipment, while their secondary missions include humanitarian aid, disaster relief, medical assistance and transportation.

FNSS ACV-30

ACV-30 is the designation of an armored combat vehicle developed by the Turkish defense company FNSS Savunma Sistemleri A.Ş.The vehicle has been selected as an Air Defence System platform by the Turkish Armed Forces within the scope of the Korkut SPAAG and HISAR surface to air missile system projects.

Göktürk-1

Göktürk-1 is a high resolution earth observation satellite (greater than 50 cm) designed and developed for the Turkish Ministry of National Defence by the Italian space service company Telespazio with technological input from Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) and Aselsan of Turkey.The agreement to build Göktürk-1 was signed on July 13, 2009 between the Ministry of National Defence and Telespazio, a Finmeccanica/Thales Group joint venture company, taking effect on July 19, 2009. Thales Alenia Space is in charge of supplying the satellite bus. Within the framework of the project, a facility for assembly, integration and testing of spacecraft (UMET) up to 5,000 kg (11,000 lb) mass will be established in Turkey, which is considered as a critical infrastructure. The project is valued at more than € 250m.The satellite with 0.80 m (2 ft 7 in) resolution is intended for use of reconnaissance over any location on earth without geographical restriction. Additionally, it will carry out various civil applications on mapping and planning, landcover survey, geology, ecosystem monitoring, disaster management, environmental control, coastal zone management, and water resources.

Göktürk-3

Göktürk-3 is a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) Earth observation satellite that will be designed and developed under prime contractorship of Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) with support of Military Electronic Industries (ASELSAN) and TÜBİTAK Space Technologies Research Institute (TÜBİTAK UZAY) for the Turkish Ministry of National Defence.

HISAR (surface to air missile system)

The HİSAR is a family of short-range to long range surface to air missile systems being developed by Aselsan and Roketsan since 2007. It consists of the HİSAR-A low attitude air defense system and HİSAR-O medium range air defence system. Guidance is infrared homing.

KALKAN Air Defence Radar

KALKAN (Turkish for "Shield") is a 3D radar system for low and medium range air defense mission operations.It is designed and manufactured by ASELSAN, a Turkish corporation that produces electronic systems for the Turkish Armed Forces.

KALKAN is currently the main radar of the Turkish Armed Forces' mobile Air Defense Early Warning and Command Control System (HERİKKS) and Medium Altitude Air Defense Missile System HISAR (surface to air missile system), entering into service in 2008. ASELSAN introduced to the market a new version of the radar, KALKAN-II, and exhibited at IDEF2017.

KORAL Electronic Warfare System

KORAL is a land-based transportable electronic warfare system developed to jam and deceive hostile radarsIt is designed and manufactured by Aselsan, a Turkish corporation that produces electronic systems for the Turkish Armed Forces.

It was developed under the Land Based Stand-off Jammer System project which started in 2009.

Laser warning receiver

A laser warning receiver is a type of warning system used as a passive military defence. It detects, analyzes, and locates directions of laser emissions from laser guidance systems and laser rangefinders. Then it alerts the crew and can start various countermeasures, like smoke screen, aerosol screen (e.g. Shtora), active laser self-defence weapon with laser dazzler (LSDW, used on Type 99 China main battle tank), laser jammer, etc.

Detectors used in LWR are usually based on a semiconductor photodetector array, which is typically cryogenically or thermal-electric cooled. Sometimes avalanche photodiodes (APD), photoconductivity, photoelectromagnetic, or photodiffusion devices are used even without cooling. Some devices detect only the main beam of foreign lasers while others detect even scattered rays.

ROKETSAN

Roketsan is a major Turkish weapons manufacturer and defense contractor based in the central Anatolian province of Ankara. Incorporated in 1988 by Turkey's Defense Industry Executive Committee (SSİK) in order to establish the nation's industrial base on rocket technology, the company has quickly risen to become one of Turkey's top 500 industrial establishments. Roketsan's current share holders include TSKGV(Turkish Armed Forces Foundation) (55.5%), Aselsan (15%), MKEK (15%), Vakıflar Bankası (10%), Havelsan (4.5%). Roketsan is best known for its vast range of unguided rockets as well as laser and infrared guided missiles such as Cirit and UMTAS. The company also produces subsystems for Stinger and Rapier missiles and provides technology and engineering solutions for other integrated civilian and military platforms.

In 2013 Turkey approved the construction by Roketsan of its first satellite launching center, initially for low earth orbit satellites.Roketsan is the only Turkish company to have obtained CMMI/ DEV 3 (Capability Maturity Model Integration – for Development) approval for all its design and development processes.

SMART-S

SMART-S Signaal Multibeam Acquisition Radar for Tracking, S band is a naval medium to long-range air and surface surveillance multibeam passive electronically scanned array 3D radar designed by Thales Nederland, formerly Hollandse Signaalapparaten (Signaal). SMART-S Mk2 is very successful. Only six years after its introduction, 30 systems were sold to navies all over the world. The radar transmitter/receiver (T/R) modules for the MK-2 are purchased by Thales from ASELSAN of Turkey.The system has two operating modes: medium range up to 150 km (81 nmi) at 27 RPM

and long range up to 250 km (130 nmi) at 13.5 RPM.

TAI TF-X

The TF-X (Turkish Fighter – Experimental) is a proposed twin-engine all-weather air superiority fighter being developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) with technological assistance from BAE Systems. The aircraft is planned to replace F-16 Fighting Falcons of the Turkish Air Force and to be exported to foreign air forces.

The Turkish Ministry of National Defense has confirmed that the first TF-X aircraft is going to fly by 2023.

TCG Anadolu

TCG Anadolu (L-408) is a planned amphibious assault ship (LHD) of the Turkish Navy that can be configured as a light aircraft carrier. It is named after the peninsula of Anatolia (Turkish: Anadolu) which forms the majority of the land mass of Turkey. The construction works began on 30 April 2016 at the shipyard of Sedef Shipbuilding Inc. in Istanbul, with the keel being laid 7 February 2018, and is expected to be completed in 2021. The vessel is intended to meet the various needs and requirements of the Turkish Armed Forces, such as sustaining long-endurance, long-distance military combat or humanitarian relief operations; while acting as a command center and flagship for the Turkish Navy.The Sedef–Navantia consortium won the tender for the LPD/LHD project of the Turkish Navy and TCG Anadolu (L-408) will use the same design as that of the Spanish ship SPS Juan Carlos I (L-61). All of the ship's weapons system will be procured by Turkish firms Aselsan and Havelsan. The ship will feature a Turkish combat management system, namely the GENESIS-ADVENT, which will be integrated by Aselsan and Havelsan. Aircraft Landing is assisted in all weather condition by Leonardo SPN-720 Precision Approach Radar.

Navantia will provide design, technology transfer, equipment and technical assistance to Sedef Shipyard of Turkey for the design and development of TCG Anadolu (L-408), which is classified as a Light Aircraft Carrier/LHD by Turkish Lloyd.It will be capable of operating the F-35B STOVL stealth multirole combat aircraft.

TF2000-class frigate

The TF-2000 class frigate is a projected anti-air warfare frigate currently undergoing development by the Turkish Naval Institute. The class will provide survivability in the presence of aerial threat and also support mission functions such as command, control, and communications, reconnaissance, early warning, surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare and electronic warfare. On 5 December 2007, Defence Industry Executive Committee approved plans to build six ships of this class (4 fixed, 2 optional). In January 2013, it was announced that Turkey was now planning to acquire a total of 8 TF-2000 frigates. With the realization of the project, it is intended to improve the anti-air warfare (AAW) capabilities of the Turkish Navy.

Türksat 6A

Türksat 6A is a Turkish communications satellite under construction, which will be developed and produced indigenously to be operated by Turksat. This satellite will be Turkey's first 100 percent domestic national satellite, which will be produced mostly from national components, is expected to be completed by 2020.
