2006 in home video

2006 in home video is considered something of a watershed for home media technology, with VHS being phased out as Blu-ray fought to replace the presently dominant DVD format. 2006 marked the end of the VHS era with the release of A History of Violence, the last VHS release for a major Hollywood film. Major retailers were switching to DVD-only sales while tapes were being sent to discount stores. This time marked the beginning of a major format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD which would be quickly won by Blu-ray.

2012 in home video

The following films, television shows and miniseries were released on Blu-ray Disc and/or DVD on the following dates in 2012 in the United States and Canada. Specific details are subject to change.

3rd Rock from the Sun

3rd Rock from the Sun is an American sitcom that aired from 1996 to 2001 on NBC. The show is about four extraterrestrials who are on an expedition to Earth, which they consider to be a very insignificant planet. The extraterrestrials pose as a human family to observe the behavior of human beings.

Dick Solomon

Dr. Richard Solomon is a character played by John Lithgow in the late-1990s NBC sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. Solomon is the High Commander of a highly trained alien unit, sent to Earth by their leader, The Big Giant Head. His crew is made up of Sally Solomon (played by Kristen Johnston), Harry Solomon (played by French Stewart), and Tommy Solomon (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt). In the first episode, "Brains and Eggs", Dick states that he has made a home of a "third rate planet, has a job at a third rate university, and now we are looking at a third floor apartment."

Don Orville

Officer Donald Leslie "Don" Orville is a fictional character in the NBC sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. He is portrayed by Wayne Knight and works as a Police Sergeant in the fictional town of Rutherford, Ohio, though he is consistently referred to as "Officer" throughout the series, much like real-world Police Sergeants and others are referred to as Officer by lay-persons, despite their actual rank. The character is first introduced to the series late in the first season, in the episode "Assault with a Deadly Dick", in which the Solomon family go to the police for help after they fall victim to crime.

Harry Solomon

Harry S. Solomon is a character in 3rd Rock from the Sun, played by French Stewart. He is the brother of Dick Solomon and Sally Solomon, and the uncle of Tommy Solomon. His middle initial is mentioned in the episode "Dick the Vote." French Stewart said in a 1998 interview, "The way the character was originally described to me was he would be an idiot on any planet. So he's got to be the biggest idiot in the universe!"

Outside the Big Three networks (ABC, CBS and NBC), Fox has won this award twice, with Ally McBeal and Arrested Development, cable network HBO has won this award four times, one with Sex and the City and three times with Veep, and streaming service Amazon Video once for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Tommy Solomon (3rd Rock from the Sun)
