2018 Pulitzer Prize

The 2018 Pulitzer Prizes were awarded by the Pulitzer Prize Board for work during the 2017 calendar year. Prize winners and nominated finalists were announced by Dana Canedy at 3:00 p.m. EST on April 16, 2018.[1]

The New York Times won the most awards of any newspaper, with three, bringing its total to one hundred and twenty-five Pulitzer Prizes.[2][3] The Washington Post won Investigative Reporting and National Reporting, the latter of which was shared with the New York Times.[4] The New York Times and The New Yorker won the prize in public service, bringing their totals to 125 and five, respectively.[5] The Press-Democrat won Breaking News Reporting, bringing its total to two prizes.[6] The staff of The Arizona Republic and USA Today won for explanatory reporting; The Cincinnati Enquirer for local reporting about the heroin epidemic; and Reuters won international reporting.

In letters, drama, and music, Kendrick Lamar's Damn won the music prize, the first non-classical and non-jazz work to win the award.[7]


Public Service
The New York Times, for reporting led by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, and The New Yorker, for reporting by Ronan Farrow,[8] "for explosive, impactful journalism that exposed powerful and wealthy sexual predators, including allegations against one of Hollywood’s most influential producers, bringing them to account for long-suppressed allegations of coercion, brutality and victim silencing, thus spurring a worldwide reckoning about sexual abuse of women."[9]
Kansas City Star "For courageous, revelatory journalism that exposed a state government’s decades–long “obsession with secrecy,” intended to shield executive decisions and suppress transparency and accountability in law enforcement agencies, child welfare services and other sectors of the government."[9]

The Press Democrat staff "For lucid and tenacious coverage of historic wildfires that ravaged the city of Santa Rosa and Sonoma County, expertly utilizing an array of tools, including photography, video and social media platforms, to bring clarity to its readers — in real time and in subsequent in-depth reporting."[10]

The Washington Post staff "For purposeful and relentless reporting that changed the course of a Senate race in Alabama by revealing a candidate’s alleged past sexual harassment of teenage girls and subsequent efforts to undermine the journalism that exposed it."[11]
Carol Marbin Miller and Audra D.S. Burch of Miami Herald "For a sweeping investigation of Florida’s juvenile justice system, prompted by the tragic death of a foster child and told in heartbreaking detail, that spurred legislative reform intended to better protect that states' young charges."[11]
Tim Eberly of The Virginian-Pilot "for compelling reporting that resulted in changes to Virginia’s parole board system, which operated for decades behind closed doors, designating first-time convicts as repeat offenders under the state’s three-strikes law and condemning them to longer sentences than some murderers, with no hope of parole."[11]

Brett Murphy of USA Today Network "for a graceful, data-driven narrative populated by the truckers who transport goods from America’s ports—spirited characters exploited by some of the country’s largest and best-known companies."[14]

Andrew Sean Greer

Andrew Sean Greer (born November 1970) is an American novelist and short story writer. Greer received the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his novel Less.

He is the author of The Story of a Marriage, which The New York Times has called an “inspired, lyrical novel,” and The Confessions of Max Tivoli, which was named one of the best books of 2004 by the San Francisco Chronicle and received a California Book Award.

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins is an American playwright. He won the 2014 Obie Award for Best New American Play, for his plays Appropriate and An Octoroon. His plays

Gloria and Everybody were finalists for the 2016 and 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama respectively. He was named a MacArthur Fellow for 2016.

Carlos Lozada (journalist)

Carlos Lozada (born 1971) is a Peruvian journalist. Since 2015, he has served as the nonfiction book critic for The Washington Post. He was a finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism, and won the award in 2019. He also won the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing.

Caroline Fraser

Caroline Fraser is an American writer. She won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography, and the 2017 National Book Critics Circle Award in Biography, for Prairie Fires, a biography of American author Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Cost of Living (play)

Cost of Living is a 2016 play by playwright Martyna Majok. It premiered in Williamstown, Massachusetts at the Williamstown Theatre Festival on June 29, 2016, and had an Off-Broadway engagement in 2017. The play won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as two Lucille Lortel Awards, including Outstanding Play.

Elif Batuman

Elif Batuman (born 1977) is an American author, academic, and journalist. She is the author of a memoir, The Possessed, and a novel, The Idiot, which was a finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. She has written many widely read essays and articles, including a 2018 essay on Japan's rental family industry for The New Yorker.

Jack E. Davis

Jack Emerson Davis is an author and professor of history in Florida. He teaches environmental history and sustainability studies at the University of Florida. In 2002-2003, he taught on a Fulbright award at the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan.

Davis received the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for History for his book The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea. He also wrote An Everglades Providence: Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the American Environmental Century, a dual biography of Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the Florida Everglades; and Race Against Time: Culture and Separation in Natchez since 1930. With Raymond Arsenault, he edited Paradise Lost?: The Environmental History of Florida, a collection of essays on the history of the human relationship with Florida nature.

His other works include The Wide Brim: Early Poems and Ponderings of Marjory Stoneman Douglas (2002); Making Waves: Female Activists in Twentieth-Century Florida (2003), edited by Kari Frederickson and Davis; and The Civil Rights Movement (2000).

Davis earned a BA (1985) and MA (1989) from the University of South Florida, and a Ph.D. in 1994 from Brandeis University. Before joining the University of Florida faculty, he taught at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he was director of environmental studies. He also taught at Eckerd College.

Race Against Time: Culture and Separation in Natchez Since 1930 won the Charles S. Sydnor Prize for the best book in southern history published in 2001. An Everglades Providence (2009), received the Florida Book Award gold medal in the nonfiction category. In addition to winning a Pulitzer Prize, The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea was awarded the 2017 Kirkus Prize in nonfiction and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. The book covers the history of Gulf of Mexico from geological formation to the present (2016).

Jo Becker

Jo Becker is an American journalist and author and a three-time recipient of the Pulitzer Prize. She works as an investigative reporter for The New York Times.

Less (novel)

Less is a satirical comedy novel by American author Andrew Sean Greer first published in 2017. It follows gay writer Arthur Less while he travels the world on a literary tour, as his fiftieth birthday looms.

The book covers themes such as romantic love, same-sex relationships, aging, and travel. Greer began writing Less as a "very serious novel" but found that "the only way to write about [being gay and aging] is to make it a funny story. And I found that by making fun of myself, I could actually get closer to real emotion – closer to what I wanted in my more serious books."Less won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. In reporting the award, the Associated Press accidentally wrote the novel's title as "Fearless." The book also was a New York Times best seller, won the Northern California Book Award, and was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction.

Martyna Majok

Martyna Majok is a Polish-American playwright who won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play Cost of Living.

Megan Twohey

Megan Twohey is an investigative reporter with The New York Times. Twohey has also written investigative reports for Reuters, the Chicago Tribune and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. She has investigated exploitive doctors, revealed untested rape kits, and uncovered a secret underground network of abandoned unwanted adopted children. Her investigative reports have led to criminal convictions and helped prompt new laws aimed at protecting vulnerable people and children. She has also won other national journalism awards and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting.In 2017, Twohey and Jodi Kantor published a report about Harvey Weinstein detailing decades of sexual abuse allegations, and more than 80 women publicly accused Weinstein of sexually abuse or assault. This led to Weinstein's firing and helped start the viral #MeToo movement. That work was honored in 2018, when The New York Times was awarded the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service.

Meridith Kohut

Meridith Kohut (born 1983) is an American photo-journalist. She won a 2016 George Polk Award. She was a finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography. She won a Chris Hondros Fund Award.

Michael Gilbertson (composer)

Michael Gilbertson (composer) (born May 31, 1987) is an American composer, conductor and pianist. He was one of three finalists for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize in music, making him one of the youngest finalists in the history of the award.Gilbertson was born in Dubuque, Iowa. He obtained degrees from The Juilliard School and Yale University. Among his composition teachers have been Samuel Adler, David Lang, John Corigliano, Christopher Rouse, Aaron Jay Kernis, Martin Bresnick, Ezra Laderman, Hannah Lash and Christopher Theofanidis. He is currently the BMI Composer in Residence with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. His published music includes choral works with Boosey & Hawkes and G. Schirmer, and orchestral works with Theodore Presser.

His orchestral music has been performed by the Minnesota Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and many regional orchestras,. An opera of his was performed by the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center; his choral music by Musica Sacra, The Crossing, and many others, and his five ballets have been performed by (among others) the New York Choreographic Institute and the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. His music was featured in a 2006 documentary, Rehearsing a Dream, that was nominated for an Academy Award. He is a professor at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.Among the awards he has received are five Morton Gould Awards from ASCAP, a Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a BMI Student Composer Award and, in 2013, BMI's prestigious Boudleaux Bryant Commission. His piano trio Fold by Fold received the Israel Prize from the Society for New Music. In March, 2016, Musical America chose him as New Artist of the Month.In 2009, Gilbertson founded a festival, Chamberfest Dubuque, as an annual fundraiser for the school at which he started his musical studies, Northeast Iowa School of Music. He returns to direct it annually.

Norimitsu Onishi

Norimitsu Onishi (大西 哲光, Ōnishi Norimitsu) is a Japanese Canadian journalist. He is Southern Africa Bureau Chief for the New York Times.

The Daily Progress

The Daily Progress is the sole daily newspaper in the vicinity of Charlottesville, Virginia. It has been published daily since September 14, 1892. The paper was founded by James Hubert Lindsay and his brother Frank Lindsay. The Progress was initially published six days a week; the first Sunday edition was printed in September 1968. Lindsay's family owned the paper for 78 years. On November 30, 1970, the family announced a sale to the Worrell Newspaper group, which took over on January 1, 1971.T. Eugene Worrell, of Bristol, Virginia, owned about two dozen rural weekly newspapers and a few dailies, all with less circulation than the Daily Progress. The Progress immediately became the group's flagship paper, and Worrell moved his newspaper group headquarters to Charlottesville.

Faced with major newspaper industry change, in 1995 Worrell sold his newspaper properties to Richmond-based Media General, which was later purchased by Nexstar Media Group, as a part of a larger $230M deal.

In the 21st century, Media General sold the Progress' printing press, and reorganized its operations to print multiple newspapers from other printing plants it controlled.

On May 17, 2012 Media General, Inc. announced signed agreements with Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., whereby a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, BH Media Group, will purchase newspapers owned by Media General, including the Progress.Following the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville in August 2017, Paul Chadwick of The Guardian wrote that the staff of the Progress "demonstrate in a practical, relatable way the importance of journalism to community, civil society and functioning democracy."Ryan M. Kelly, who worked for the newspaper at the time, took a photograph of the Aug 12 vehicular attack that resulted in the death of Heather Heyer won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography.
