1949 Indiana Hoosiers football team

The 1949 Indiana Hoosiers football team represented the Indiana Hoosiers in the 1949 Big Nine Conference football season. They participated as members of the Big Ten Conference. The Hoosiers played their home games at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana. The team was coached by Clyde B. Smith, in his second year as head coach of the Hoosiers.

1949 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team

The 1949 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team represented the University of Notre Dame during the 1949 college football season. The Irish, coached by Frank Leahy, ended the season with 10 wins and no losses, winning the national championship. The 1949 team became the seventh Irish team to win the national title and the third in four years. Led by Heisman winner Leon Hart, the Irish outscored their opponents 360–86. The 1949 team is the last team in what is considered to be the Notre Dame Football dynasty, a stretch of games in which Notre Dame went 46–0–2 and won three national championships and two Heisman Trophies. The Irish squad was cited by Sports Illustrated as the part of the second best sports dynasty (professional or collegiate) of the 20th century and second greatest college football dynasty.

Bill Lange (offensive guard)

William Henry Lange (January 12, 1928 – April 7, 1995) was an American football offensive guard who played five seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Colts and Chicago Cardinals. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the 30th round of the 1950 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of Dayton and attended St. Rose High School in Lima, Ohio.

Bill Svoboda

William Ray Svoboda (July 12, 1928 – June 20, 1980) was an American football linebacker who played nine seasons in the National Football League for the Chicago Cardinals and New York Giants. He played college football at Tulane University and was drafted in the third round of the 1950 NFL Draft. Svoboda died after suffering a heart attack while jogging.

Bob Schnelker

Robert Bernard Schnelker (October 17, 1928 – December 12, 2016) was an American football tight end who played for nine seasons in the National Football League, mainly with the New York Giants. Schnelker played college football at Bowling Green State University and was drafted in the 29th round of the 1950 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. Schnelker was a two-time Pro Bowler and a member of the 1956 NFL Champion Giants. After retiring from football, he was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Rams, Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings. He died on December 12, 2016 in Naples, Florida.

He was drafted by the Rams in the 18th round of the 1950 NFL Draft. He played college football at Southern Methodist University and attended Longview High School in Longview, Texas.

Jim Cullom

James Henry "Truck" Cullom (November 5, 1925 – March 4, 1998) was an American football guard in the National Football League (NFL) for the New York Yanks.

Cullom served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. After the war, he played college football at the University of California, where he was a three-year lineman and placekicker from 1947–49, playing on two of coach Pappy Waldorf's Rose Bowl teams. Cullom was a first team All-Coast tackle in 1949, and also played on Cal's rugby team.Cullom was drafted in the 24th round of the 1949 NFL Draft and again in the seventeenth round of the 1950 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. After one season playing for the New York Yanks, he was recalled by the Marines and was wounded in the Korean War. Cullom later returned to Cal where he worked as an assistant coach for both the football and rugby teams.Cullom was inducted into the University of California Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995.

Joseph LaVernie Watson (August 19, 1925 – November 2, 2006) was an American football player who played one season with the Detroit Lions of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions with the fifth overall pick of the 1950 NFL Draft. He played college football at Rice University.

John Helwig

John Francis Helwig (December 5, 1927 – December 2, 1994) was an American football linebacker who played four seasons with the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Bears in the eleventh round of the 1950 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of Notre Dame and attended Mount Carmel High School in Los Angeles, California.

Lindy Berry

Lindy Berry (December 21, 1927 – April 19, 2014) was an American gridiron football quarterback. He played college football for the TCU Horned Frogs at Texas Christian University. Berry was selected in the 1950 NFL Draft, and played professional football for two seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos in what later became the Canadian Football League (CFL). In 1950, he received the Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy for the CFL West Division's most valuable player.

Lou Karras

Louis George Karras (September 19, 1927 – September 20, 2018) was an American football defensive tackle in the National Football League for the Washington Redskins, until an eye injury prematurely ended his career. He played college football at Purdue University. Karras was drafted 32nd in the third round of the 1950 NFL draft. He had two younger brothers, former pro football player Ted Karras and former pro-football player/actor Alex Karras.

Karras had a college career at Purdue; he was a three-year starter (1946, 1948–49), was selected 2nd Team All-Big Ten in 1949. He was named the MVP for Purdue in 1949. Following his college career, he was selected for the 1949 East-West Shrine Game, the 1950 Chicago-based College All-Star Game and the 1950 Hula Bowl. After his professional football career ended, he founded a successful tire business. He was also on the city council of Gary, Indiana.

Mike Swistowicz

Michael Paul Swistowicz (April 22, 1927 – November 24, 1973) was an American football player who played one season in the National Football League with the New York Yanks and Chicago Cardinals. He was drafted by the New York Yanks in the fifth round of the 1950 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of Notre Dame and attended Tilden High School in Chicago Illinois. Swistowicz died in 1973 after working out.

Ralph McAllister

Ralph Dixon McAllister (October 13, 1928 – August 13, 2003) was an American gridiron football player and coach. He played college football at the University of Minnesota and professionally in Canadian football for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. McAllister was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 1950 NFL Draft. He served as the head football coach at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota from 1959 to 1963 and North Central College in Naperville, Illinois from 1964 to 1969.

Tom Bienemann

Tom Bienemann (January 28, 1928 – October 5, 1999) was a defensive end in the National Football League. He was drafted in the eleventh round of the 1951 NFL Draft by the Chicago Cardinals and played six seasons with the team. Previously, he had been drafted in the 1950 NFL Draft by the Cardinals, but remained in college at Drake University in Des Moines, IA.

Truett Smith

Truett Henry Smith (March 17, 1924 – December 29, 2000) was an American football blocking back who played two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 32nd round of the 1948 NFL Draft. He was also drafted by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 1950 NFL Draft. Smith first enrolled at the University of Wyoming before transferring to Mississippi State University. He attended Hazlehurst High School in Hazlehurst, Mississippi.
